System files + partition help needed

edited November 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi,

I'm wanting to re-partition my hard drive (I have partition magic 8) but i've run into some probs! I tried it a few days ago but got errors and my system wouldnt boot after (which I fixed in recovery console) but when I defraged today I noticed that my system files etc are located at the end of my hard drive and everything else is at the begining. Is there anyway (as safe as poss!!!!) to move the system files to the begining of the disk so I can put a new partition on the drive?

Many thanks for any help and advice.

Trev

P.S.
I'm using Win XP Pro SP2 with a 160GB SATA HD (only recognizes 149GB though?!?!?!?!?!)

PQMagic is quite fussy about errors, as I'm sure you know by now. Try to run chkdsk (if you haven't done so already), as that should get you in shape to try partitioning the drive again.

Resize the existing partition down as small as possible, leaving several gigabytes so Windows has some breathing room. Create your new partition and move it to the end of the drive. Then raise the size of the original partition to fill in the blank space in the middle of the drive. :)

    Hi, Thanks for your response.

I have run chkdsk (with /F) and it fixed some bitmap attribute errors(?) but said there was also errors with the file system and it appears they wasnt fixed. How do I go about geting those sorted?

Did you get any information about the type of errors it was finding? It might be worthwhile to run the Quick and the Full test from the hard drive manufacturer as well.

No, The only thing that came up was that there were errors in the file system. Ran both tests from western dig's diagnostics and both tests came up as passed without any errors. Should I do a repair install or is that a bit drastic? lol
