My brother came to stay with me recently..and I told him NOT to download anything..and that the sites he would surely visit could bring some nasty things to my puter....well it finally happened...found a long apologetic note from him saying something happened while he was surfing today...that he "tried to fix it" (which almost scares me more than the idea of the virus) so I do not know what HE has done....but I, after finding his note, ran spybot and it found the Smitfraud files....I selected it and hit fix problem. (Hoping that wasn't a bigger mistake) then I googled smitfraud and found and read a few of your threads...and ran hijackthis...and adaware. Here is the Hijackthis log:

After running the spybot...it says that it didnt find smitfraud again...but I still cannot change my desktop to a personal photo..and the pop-up begging me to look into protecting my computer is still popping up every 8 seconds.

Hi Kathy, welcome to Short-Media Forums!

I don't see any indication of a Firewall in your HijackThis log. This may be because:

(1.) You are using Windows Firewall or a hardware Firewall.
(2.) You are using a Firewall of an unknown vendor.
(3.) You are using a Firewall, but it is disabled for unknown reasons
(4.) You don't use any firewall at all.

In the case you don't have a Firewall, please download one from the list below - They are Free!

On to the fix:

I would like to see another log from HijackThis.

• Run Hijackthis.
• Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
• Next click on Open uninstall manager.
• Press the Save list button.
• Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
• Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Next, download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Post the following back here:

1) Uninstall list
2) Contents of C:\rapport.txt
3) New HijackThis log
