[Solved]Redirection of Google searches

Since yesterday I have nasty problems on my computer.
There are two problems:
1. I cannot open anymore the website which I had set as the IE start page.
I have a small network and the other two computers have no problem with this.
2. When I click on search results from Google I am often, not always, transferred to other search sites, such as Up-Search, Oldhetaria, Wordsea, etc.

I have tried many things already, but I have not been able to get rid of the problem.

Here is what I did already:
- I ran AVG anti-spyware, both in normal and safe mode. It finds a trojan: Downloader.Zlob.aty. But after quarantaine or delete it comes back again.
- I ran Norton Antivirus: no problems found
- I did a cleaning job with Clean Cache and CC Cleaner
- I ran Ad-Aware: no problems found
- I ran Hijack This. I noticed several strange lines with code 017. NameServer = 85.255.115.42,85.255.112.114. I had Hijackthis fix this, and they disappeared then, but then my problem was that the computer could not go to the internet anymore. So, I went back to an earlier restore point and then I could go to the internet again.
I also ran Fixwareout.

Below are the log files of Fixwareout and Hijackthis.

I hope that some of you are ableto help me with this. I would really appreciate this!

    Hi Geer! :)

You have HijackThis in your Temp folder. This is not a good place as HijackThis will create backups that will get lost in that folder. Delete the current HiajckThis file you have, and follow the instructions below which will automaticlly install HijackThis to the Program Files folder.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Close HijackThis for now.
    ________________________

    On to the fix:

Delete the current FixWareout file you have, and follow the instructions below. We will redownload FixWareout.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites and save it to your desktop:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
    • Double click Fixwareout.exe to run it.
    • Click Next, then Install.
    • Make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
    • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
    • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
    • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
    • At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
    • A report.txt file will be created in the C:\fixwareout folder. Please keep it safe as I'll need to see it soon.
Now lets check some settings on your system.

    (2000/XP) Only
    • Click Start > Connect to > Show all connections.
    • Right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
    • Left click on Properties.
    • Click the Networking tab.
    • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
    • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. (That option might not be avaiable on some systems).
    Next!
    • Click Start > Run type cmd and hit OK.
    • Type ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter, (Note: there is a space between ipconfig and /flushdns).
    • Type exit hit enter.
    ________________________

Next, I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
    ________________________

    Post the following back here:

    1) Uninstall list
    2) Contents of report.txt from the C:\fixwareout folder
    3) New HijackThis log

Hi Geer! Before we continue, I have a question.

You have Norton AntiVirus 2003. Is this still recieving updates or not? Please let me know.

    Do you have a Firewall?
  • edited November 2006
    Dear Trogan_1000,

Yes, Norton Antivirus 2003 is getting regular automatic updates. Latest update was 1 Nov 2006.
I have Windows Firewall on. Untill half a year ago, I used ZoneAlarm, but have uninstalled ZoneAlarm then.

Sounds like you know what your doing. :)

    Lets continue with the fix:

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware already - thats good! We're going to run a scan with it soon so please make sure it is updated.

      Dear Trogan_1000,

Thanks again for the excellent help with this. I really appreciate this.

I did all the actions as you instructed. Only, I ran into a problem I think with the Panda Active scan. When I hit the Free Scan button I get an new small window saying that ActiveScan has started. Underneath it says "click the bar above to start download". But i do not see this bar. I let the window open for quite some time but nothing happens.

It seems that the problems which I had, have gone away. I have no problem to go to my IE start page and related pages, and also the Google searches seem to behave normal.

Below you will find the logs of AVG Spyware and a new HijackThislog.

The Panda scan must be done using Internet Explorer. If you could try running another scan following the instructions above, that would be good.

      Dear Trogan_1000,

      Thanks again.
I have unistalled the old JRE and installed update 9.

IE and Google seem to work fine now, except that I still cannot get Panda Activescan to run.
After I press "scan your PC" and complete te registration I get one pop up window, which says that Activescan has started and that I should click the bar above to start the download. But this bar I do not see.
When I do the same on my laptop, Activescan does work without problems.

Not sure why its not working, but there is no need if your not having anymore problems.

Is there anything else I can help with, or can we mark this resolved?

      Hello Trogan_1000,

I have sent an e-mail to Panda to ask their input on the possible cause of the problem with running Activescan, but no reply yet.

Everything else still works fine :)))

So thanks again for your great help, and agree to closing this thread as resolved.

Hi Geer! If you hear back from Panda, please send me a PM, as I'd be curious to what they say. Although I have a feeling they won't respond. :(

      I'll mark this resolved! :)
