Fedora GFX Install Problem...

I am trying to install the Fedora Core 6 on my laptop, but when it loads the graphical installer the screen goes black. Yet I see it probing the video and it'll see the ATi Radeon Mobility X700, after that it loads something I can't see it as it goes too quickly, I am sure it's X Server, but it instantly goes blank. I do a CTRL/ALT/DEL and it starts the reboot I can see it unloading it all fine.

Any ideas?

I see when I reboot that it says the X Server started successfully, but yet it's a blank window after that point. I have tried combinations of

    linux noprobe skipddc resolution=1024x768

To no avail. I'll try the textual install I guess :( But I am worried I'll still have the problem when the install is done.

OK as expected I am brought to the damned terminal window instead of gnome! I have no idea how to get to something familiar. These laptops are supposed to be Linux compatible from my understanding... it's a PowerPro A2:17 from Powernotebooks.com.

    Tried that, same thing....

Here is some more info on the problem...
    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/redhat-fedora-linux-help/75623-fedora-core-6-login-window-problem.html

So I type startx and the screen goes blank again...
    system-config-display screen goes blank...
    xinit same thing

I've tried messing with xorg.conf... I figured out how to edit it, but I won't even pretend to know what the hell I am doing, I was just basing what I could off this link:

I just tried using the latest Ubuntu... and sure enough the same exact issue is occurring, it seems like it booted up too I heard a drum go off after it finished loading into the BLACK SCREEN.

OMG... this laptop does not like Linux I guess :(

OK I found this... it seems as it says. The monitor is turning itself off, but x server is starting up.

I am trying to configure xorg.conf with vi xorg.conf and it opens but I am having a hell of a time editing it... it's not obeying my damned commands, it's editing but only partially! Like the keys are not doing what they are supposed to ARG! This didn't happen with Fedora at least.

I find that nano is more intuitive for editing, but for vi:

    press 'i' to edit.

once you're done editing, press esc to enter commands.
type ':wq' to save and quit.
