XP hangs on DVD media player shutdown

edited November 2006 in Science & Tech
I have a problem that no one has been able to figure out. If I put a DVD in to one of my DVD drives and watch it with WinDVD 5 or WMP 9 and then try to eject or close the player, the system freezes and won't respond to anything. I have no conflicts in device manager and I get no errors, just a frozen screen. I have the latest video card drivers and I also tried reinstalling them to no avail. This is very puzzling and it worked fine until this past week. The only thing that I did was install the latest Forceware 93.71 drivers. I've already requested support with Nvidia to see if that could be the problem. I tried to watch a DVD in safe mode and nothing appeared in the window even though WMP 9 said it was playing and when I shut it down, it didn't freeze so I'm inclined to think it is a software error of some sort. Can anyone help me try to identify this problem?
Thanks in advance!

Change what changed. Go in to control panel, system, hardware, device manager, display adapters, your video card, properties, driver, rollback driver.

After that, try again. If it works...sweet! If not ... post back.

Yes, I have tried that and unfortunately, there are only two drivers that work with my card and neither work. I can play CD's with the media players fine, but when I try a DVD in either DVD drive, it freezes. I've also tried to do it in safe mode but the system needs the video drivers to play the DVD. I wish it would at least give me an error message so I could find out where to start. I am going to wait for some new video drivers and if that doesn't work, I'll probably end up doing a fresh XP install. :(
