What could cause a PC to change IP's?

Ok, today I was surfin the net, AIM'in it up with some homies, and all of a sudden, windows pops up a balloon saying my IP is a duplicate on the network. I am then locked out from the net, with a msg that our network admin/whatever stopped an attempted IP theft by this PC. I and talked to them, and got all the stuff re-enabled. Now, I know I did not do it purposefully, but that has me worried that it could possibly happen again, and get me in trouble ;(.

My question is, why would this happen?

What OS? A simple release/renew of the IP or "repair" operation to the network connection will often change your IP. It could be as simple as a disconnection and reconnection to the network, although I don't know why it would hand out a duplicate IP to you.

    It's XP pro.

    I wasn't release/renewing, just normal stuff.

They said that the IP that i switched to had been in use by that person for weeks, and all of a sudden, it jumped off, and I got it.

it was also the next one (x.x.x.118 to x.x.x.119)

Sounds like your ISP has done a fine job of f**king up their DHCP service...

It sounds like another person on your subnet liked the IP address he had through DHCP so much that he hard-coded it, thinking he could make it a static by simply typing it in to his TCP/IP props or router. Maybe he was running a server, or had an address he shared with friends to enable online gaming, and when your system picked it up, he wanted it back. Hence, he tries to take your IP, neither one of you can access the net, and errors occur.
