Unable to play Videos with Audio

edited November 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi there. I recently reformatted my hard-drive and am having some problems playing video files that contain audio. I can play audio-less video files, and I can also play video-less audio file, just not a file which is a combination of the 2!

O_o

I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with the drivers as i've installed the latest ones 3/4 times now. It's strange. When it happens, say I open WMP, the PC just slows right down (doesn't crash), and I've got to close the program down through the task manager... then everything is fine again!

Can anyone help me?

(P.s. sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, it's the closest sub-forum I could find!)

Thanks a lot!

Please download a copy of Media Player Classic to test whether or not WMP is broken.
  • edited November 2006
It's not, i've reinstalled it twice, and i've also tried playing files with DivX.

Please download MPC any how. Reinstalling it does not necessarily mean all of WMP's files have been replaced, because WMP relies on other system files not specific to a WMP installer.

It does the exact same thing :(

Ok, it's still slowing my PC right down whenever I try to play a video file with audio!

I've reinstalled every single one of my drivers, codecs and video playing software and nothing works!!!

    I don't understand >_<

Sorry about the triple post, it won't let me delete them >_<

    UPDATE:

Ok, I just installed some K-lite codec pack thing and we're making progress. Now my PC doesn't slow right down. Now what happens is the video plays and I can hear the audio but I can't see the actual video itself.

Does this help anyone understand the problem?

Okay, clear out the k-lite codec pack, any DiVX, XViD, AC3, or any other codecs you may have installed. Keep media player classic handy, and run the following things:

    1. Windows update.
    2. Dial-a-fix with ALL boxes checked (Download: HERE)
    3. Go to start -> run -> type "cmd" w/o quotes and hit enter -> type "sfc /scannow" w/o quotes

After all that is done... Reboot.

If you have an XViD file, please go HERE and download "XviD-1.1.2-01112006.exe." Try to run your XViD file with MPC.

    More problems are slowly arising:

Such as my PC automatically resetting when trying to open video files, and the random flickering of my screen for no apparent reason.

Could this be anything to do with SP2? I remember having some problems where some idiot technician started messing around with the system files relating to it.

Is there any way of uninstalling SP2 completely and reinstalling it again? If, that is, if it would have anything to do with the problems I am experiencing.

It might.. Although I'm beginning to wonder if you don't have driver or hardware issues. SP2 is pretty stable.

    I'm confused. It's started happening again! >_<
  • edited November 2006
Hmmm, ok, I just uninstalled all the codecs AGAIN and tried to play a video in RealPlayer. It said it needed additional software (obviously) and tried to search for it on the net and couldn't find it. It said it needed a file called ICM.XVID

So I reinstalled the Xvid Codec and the same thing happened...

Does that mean that the folders are screwed up somehow?
  • edited November 2006
I was thinking, the PC only slows down when the media player is trying to access the codecs. When the codecs are there the PC damn near crashes, when the codecs aren't there the PC functions as normal, I just can't play the videos.

Does this help anyone diagnose the problem? :(

I admit that, at this point, my personal solution would be to back up my stuff and reformat my computer. That's what I would do if I were in your situation.

Granted, they say reformatting is the sign of a bad technician, but this problem has no clear origin and has symptoms that can be caused by any number of files and/or sections of windows.

    Sorry, mate.

    Argh!

But... argh! It's doesn't make sense! How can I play both videos and music files without any problems, but then my computer freezes like a war veteran's foot when I try to play a file that contains the two?

before your reformat i suggest you try the following. go into add remove programs and uninstall anything codec related. k-lite codec packs, avi demuxers, etc....fou cc converters, anything related to audio video ENcoding, and DECoding hence codec. Also uninstall Quicktime, Real Player, Winamp, or anything other than Windows Media Player.

THEN after that, restart your computer and download THIS:

    http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Pack_All_in_1_download.htm.

Install and run through the setup....and post your results HERE in this thread.

We've already gone through the process of uninstalling the codecs, and hand-picked known-working codecs to test instead of hammering the system with a mish-mash of codecs.

The difference between this codec pack is that it junkies out other previous installations. There is a more advanced version that i use, but this in most cases fixes the latter.

It is worth a shot, before a reformat.

Ok, I uninstalled EVERYTHING but WMP and the file is playing, but there's no video, just audio... which is a huge improvement than nothing at all but 100% CPU Usage :P

I'm trying to install the above file, but it just gets to "Downloading file" and sticks there... i'm really not having much luck with this am I? O_o

Oh, and I just had a thought! Could the fact that I am running 2 hard-disks have anything to do with this?

    Another update:

I installed the All in 1 pack as you said and NOW a magical error message pops up!

"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

    *Cries*

    Jesus...

I just installed Windows Live Messenger and my PC is doing the EXACT same thing as when I was trying to play those videos...

There's gotta be some link between both incidents... surely?

I've modified deleted registry entries and recreated .dll files and swapped mods with video driver and soundcard installations to max out my hardware with my codec experience.

The all in one codec pack when i ran into it was simply a miracle....as although wasn't as good as my manual installation of soft-mods it did the job. I'm sorry to hear about your experience Jamino however at this point, it was a fair shot, and as a last resort, i'm afraid i'm going to have to take it to THRAX and hands down do a reformat. Its not the best solution, but if all in one doesn't do it for you, then something is clearly wrong on a low level basis.

The time you invest to fix the problem is most likely the same amount of time it would take for you to do a "clean" install.

Thanks all to your help....and Jamino i hope for the best.

    Oh lord... O_o

Will I need to reformat the 2nd hard-drive?

no you will not need to format the second hard drive. i take it this is your first hard drive PC format? in fact, you can transfer anything you want saved onto the second hard drive so it does not get deleted.

Well i've been subject to many reformats before, but i've never done one myself... i'm reluctant to use this CD my friend gave me too, as some activation thing came up before and i've never seen it before. I think, maybe, it's the copy of windows that is dodgy (although I have a legitimate product key, I just lost my own copy).

So the second hard-drive has nothing to do with the problems i'm encountering?

unless you're running programs whose installs are rooted onto the second drive then no, i have no reason myself to believe your second hard drive is the cause of your media issues. on my ABiT-Nf7-S 2.0 board i had 2 750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10's (SATA) with two Maxtor 500GB MaXLiNE PRO's (IDE) hooked up with no problem.

what you're suffering is a low level issue in the OS that causes your plethora of errors. I'm afraid despite you losing your CD that you will have to re-format.

I am almost certain this will do nothing, but have you tried using Windows Media Player 10 (or 11 even) instead of 9?

i used both players wmp10/11. i prefer wmp10 so i uninstalled wmp11, but ONLY for MPeG video.

    for music i use winamp.

for dvd i use windvd 7 platinum pro

for ANYTHING with .avi (includes divx, xvid etc), .wmv, .hdmov (high definition) etc i use media player classic.

Isiea, could the copy of windows my friend gave me be faulty? Is it possible?

Also, would it be likely for a low level issue, such as you're describing, to occur despite me only having JUST reformatted my hard-drive and reinstalling windows? O_o
