SVCHOST.exe gobbling up all my cpu possible virus?? PLease HELP!

REcently when I turned on my computer I noticed that my start bar looked different also my comp. started running real slow. In task manager I noticed SVCHOST.EXE eating up huge amounts of CPU almost 100% at times. I ran SpyBOTSearch&Destroy, ADaware, and Bitdefender Deep System scan. Bitdefender found nothing and Spybot found 2 and those have been deleted. Im including logs of both adaware and hjt. Could some one please help me sort this all out.

Sincerely, Chris

Your logs look fine to me Chris.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

    BitDefender detected WildTangent and WeatherBug.

WeatherBug is an software program powered by AWS WeatherNet that provides weather updates (for American cities) from a small icon in the systray. WeatherBug gives you current weather conditions, your local weather report, and storm alerts, however the free version is ad-supported containing both banner and pop-up ads. In some cases, it installs the My Search toolbar. Weatherbug is installed as a secondary application with many popular pieces of software including AOL Instant Messenger. According to their website, Weatherbug is not spyware, however it is adware. It does not monitor, collect data or 'spy' on its user base, however the program is considered adware since the free version is ad-supported.
You can read more about it here:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/weatherbug.shtml

Removal instructions are there too, if you encounter any difficulties, please let me know.

WildTangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather much information about the computer system.
You can read more about it here:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtml

Similarly, removal instructions are there. If you encounter any difficulties, please let me know.

Restart the computer. Then navigate to and delete the following files if found:
    C:\WINDOWS\Wast2.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\AdRoar.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\ARUpdate.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\cpruninst.exe

I am unsure as to what this folder is:
    D:\Vault\
Can you please have a look at it, and tell me if you know anything?

Now run HijackThis and place a checkmark by this entry:
    O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing)
Close all other windows except HijackThis and press "Fix Checked". Then close HijackThis.

Then, open up Norton and clear all the qurantined items. Restart the computer.

Last of all, rescan with both HijackThis and BitDefender and post the new logs in your next reply.

I was able to delete C:\WINDOWS\Wast2.exe
however I wasnt able to find AdRoar.dll, ARUpdate.exe, nor cpruninst.exe
The Vault folder is actually a folder of mine.
    I also placed a checkmark by O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing)
And IT deleted it at first, however when I restarted my computer and ran HJT again it was back.
Here are my new HJT logs and BIT defender deep system scan logs.

    Did you remove WeatherBug?

    Download: CCleaner (freeware)
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
Run the installer, and uncheck the option to install Yahoo toolbar (unless you want Yahoo toolbar).
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
    Select the following:
    cleaner.gif
Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

    Then:
    1. Open Windows Task Manager by pressing "Crtl" + "Alt" + "Delete".
    2. Click the Processes tab.
    3. Look to see if iosdt.exe is running (it will be using most CPU resources). If iosdt.exe is running, terminate it.

    Next:
    1. Open Control Panel > Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab.
    3. Under Hidden Files & Folders click "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
    4. Next uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
    5. Reboot in Safe Mode (in XP press F8 before windows begins loading)
    6. Open C:\WINDOWS\system32
    7. Delete the Folders & files with iosdt in the name (there should be 1 folder, iosdt, containing all the corrupt files) you may want to do a search for iosdt to make sure everything is removed.
    8. Empty the Recycle Bin.
    9. Run HijackThis and fix the entry again if it is still there.
    9. Reboot in Normal Mode.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:
    D:\Vault\yahoo_tradewinds1-1_tm1-1.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see, along with a new HijackThis and BitDefender log.

I decided to leave wheather bug, i figure it doesnt do any harm. I did run CCcleaner and delete the files. I tried doing crtl/alt/delete to find the iosdt file but i couldnt find anything, and I couldnt find anything in the system32 folder. also i notice that every single time i go to hjt and remove that file it continues to come back. other problems that i am experiencing are I cannot access the internet in Normal mode only in Safe mode. also whenever I restart/shutdown it takes around 4 minutes to restart/shutdown. here are my bitdefender log and hjt log.

Boot to safe mode, run HijackThis and fix the following entry:
    O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing)
Close HijackThis and restart the computer, back to normal mode.

Now navigate to and delete the following file:
    C:\Documents and Settings\gyyhhh\Local Settings\Application Data\Wildtangent\Cdacache\00\00\0E.dat

Then go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:
    D:\Vault\yahoo_tradewinds1-1_tm1-1.exe

Copy and paste the results from the Jotti scan, as well as a new HijackThis and BitDefender log. You should be more or less cleaned up now.

I actually did that already and the jotti scan came back with nothing and each time i delete b]O23 - Service: distributed.net client (dnetc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iosdt\iosdt.exe (file missing) it constantly comes back.

    sincerely Chris

So the entry refuses to go away even if you deleted it in safe mode?
  • edited November 2006
Yes, even in safe mode whenever I delete it, it still comes back.
  • edited November 2006
    1. Open the Services utility in your Administrative Tools control panel.

    2. In the list of services, locate the service named "distributed.net client" or "dnetc" and double-click on it.

    3. In the General tab of the Properties window that opens, click the Stop button.

    4. Once the service is stopped, choose Disabled in the "Startup Type" drop-down menu and then click OK. Close the Services utility after that.

    5. Run HijackThis and try delting the service again:

Click on the "Config" button in the lower right corner of HijackThis' main window. In the next window click on the "Misc Tools" button at the top then click the "Delete an NT service" button. Type the following in the box and click OK:

    dnetc

If the operation is sucessful, reboot, run HJT again, and post a fresh log.

Okay I did everything you said and that program finally disappeared, however my computer is still acting very strange. My bit defender program is behaving very eraticaly and at times it seems as if i have no control over it. I dont know what to do anymore. Here is my HJT log.

    Sincerely, Chris

    First of all, reinstall BitDefender.

Then run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the log in your next reply.

I need to know more specifically how your computer is acting strange.
