xp and a dodgy dvd drive!

Hey all,

I have a strange situation..... I burn a data dvd, full of mp3's pictures etc, just loads of files...

The disk works fine in a dvd player (one which plays mp3's, divx etc)

However, if I put it back in to my pc - it refuses to see it - in either the dvd drive or the dvd rw drive.

This appears to be the case for the majority of burnt dvd's regardless of media

I am pretty sure its going to be some iffy setting in xp, or something odd thats causing it rather than a hardware issue...

Any ideas?

Has the disc been "closed" or "finalized"?

Hi prof, yes, the disks I have been trying are always finalized when I burn them (there nearly always 95% full anyway, so I do it pretty much every time)

I'm wondering if this might be an issue of compatibility between a drive and the media. Some drives don't like some discs. This site examines the quality of CD-R media and points out differences in quality. I'm sure the same holds true for DVD's.

Yes, but surely the very same drive that wrote the media should be able to read from the same disk, 1 day later!?

I would think so, but nothing like that would surprise me a whole lot.

Have you tried reinstalling and/or updating your burner software? You might also try a free burner program to see if the software makes a difference in the result.

    Hey prof,

Yeah, I tried a free burning app- xp cd burner pro, still the same situation.

Curiously enough- this has a finalise option, which i use, however, in nero the finalise option is always greyed out!

(My motivation for getting the xp cd burner pro installed in the first place)

    Perhaps thats somehow connected...

However, even if the discs were not finalised- the same burner that burnt them should be able to detect them shouldnt it!

Would it be worth trying to upgrade the firmware for the dvd burner?

If a newer one is available, I'd say it's worth a shot.

Can you have Nero save a log of a session, then post it here?

It could just be a dodgy drive, too. I've rarely had a burner last more than a few years, some for much less. It would cost you about $35 to find out for sure.

Here is a log from a DVD just burnt in Nero
(Finalise option is greyed out still in the program, however, looking below it looks like it is finalizing it anyway...)

Can you try the drive in a different computer? If it flakes out there in the same way it is doing now, it would pretty much indicate that the drive itself is the culprit.

I've uninstalled all the burning apps I had apart from Ashampoo burning studio, I can burn with this, if I dont finalize then the drive recognises the disks fine.... I havnt tried finalizing yet, I will do shortly.

However, that means all the dvd's I wrote with nero and xp cd burner pro still do not work in my drive, is there any way I can get the content off these?

Have you tried them in any other drive?
