[Solved]Virus there, but Can't See it

Um, I have Norton Antvirus,a nd it can't find any viruses. However, I can tell that I have a virus :( . I keep getting popups with sexual content, and others that lead me to other websites with some fake antispyware software. I also get a windows-like popup, the yellow bubble and an ! in a triangle. I know that this is fake too. Please, someone hepl me delte this!!

I think the name of the virus might be Gold Codec, but not completely sure.

Thanks in advance,

Tomasz

I think you have a new variant of the Smitfraud infection, but lets check.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
    http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

I think this could be a new variant since the log is not showing what I thought it would, but nonetheless we will find out.

But first, I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file back here.

It looks good, although the hompage is still different, but I think I can change this manually.

OK, this IS a new variant of the Smitfraud infection as the infection is still present in your log, and is likely the reason why you can't change your homepage. Let's wait a few hours to see if the tool gets updated. If it does not, I will notify someone about this.
  • edited November 2006
    Alright, thanks.

And what can this virus do to my computer? Is it anything serious or something?

Hi Tomasz! Sorry for the delay.

No, the Smitfraud infection should not cause any damage to your computer. What Smitfraud will try and do, is force you to buy their Rogue anti-spyware products so the creator's can gain money.

    Hi again Tomasz!

To help update SmitfraudFix, I need you to upload some files. Follow these instructions.

Please download the Suspicious file Packer from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop.

    Run SFP.exe.

Please copy the following line into the Step 1: Paste Text window:

    C:\Program Files\Gold Codec

Click "Continue" and close the program.

This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab

Next please visit SpyKillers forum here

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0

Read the instructions for uploading files which is the first topic on the forum, then start a new Topic named 'Smitfraud: Gold Codec'. Please then post a link to this thread and upload the requested files.cab archive from your desktop

    Tomasz, SmitfraudFix has been updated.

Open smitfraudfix.cmd and select Option 4 to update SmitfraudFix. Follow the instructions onscreen.

Post a new log from Option 1 once updated.

    Please do the following...

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Panda only found cookies, so that is fine,

I think I know where the confusion was with Java. Try these instructions please:

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Your HijackThis log is clean. Let me know how things are for you.

Here are some steps you can take to stay more secure online:

It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware: You can clean this by doing the following:
    • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
    • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
    • Close the Help and Support Center box.
    • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
    • Select (C: ) then click OK.
    • Click the More Options tab.
    • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC(s) from being usurped by undesireables. If you don't have a Firewall, then choose one from the list here

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Since you have AVG Anti-Spyware, there is no need to download Ad-Aware or Spybot. However, you should download the other 2.

Spyware Blaster/Guard are not scanners but preventer's. They block malware before it can access your computer. Just make sure you check for updates once a week and that is it.

Do weekly scans with AVG AS. It is an excellent program.

I hope that helps. Can we mark this resolved?

SpyFalcon is part of the Smitfraud variants, but as you can see A LOT of newer variants have come out since then. This infection seems to keep coming and coming. :D
