laptop suddenly runs SUPER slow

On my brothers laptop he brought it home for thanksgiving break and right when he left the computer takes FOREVER to startup from the windows xp screen to showing all the icons on the startbar. We ran norton, spybot, adaware, hijackthis and defragged the hdd, nothing worked. there was nothing suspicious in the hijackthis log as well, everything was a program I knew. Any ideas for this??

Songs and videos play choppy as well. I had this happen to me on my desktop when i went from SP1 -> SP2, then uninstalled SP2.

    Check the task manager to see if anything is consuming 100% CPU time.

    the system idle process uses 99. only scvhost takes up 24,000

    How much RAM? could be going bad... Need to do some elimination.

    he has hp dv5000 AMD 64 Turion 1.97GHz 1GB ram
