[resolved]888 toolbar and MSN virus

Hi I am new to this whole thing. I am in urgent need of help with a virus thats been clogging up my laptop.

Youll probably have heard of it and I have searched other forums for help but their advice is very sporadic and nothing has worked.

The virus is bred from MSN messenger, a contact will send you a link to a picture (usually something like ' :P is this you??????? ) and if you click on it
obviously you get the virus. It says its a jpg file but its not its some other type which is harmful. I didnt in fact click on it (if I did it was out of pure accident). I think it lies dormant for a while and then last night whilst I was on msn, I was inadvertently sending the same message to all my contacts. From what Ive read on other forums the virus hijacks msn and gives u a fake version of the program.

I have Mcafee installed on my computer, however the virus has disabled that and no matter what I try I am unable to get it working. On the advice of a friend I downloaded AVG free edition and have done a complete virus scan. To be fair, im ****e with computers so I dont even know if I'm doing the right thing.

I have also taken measures to remove all traces of MSN messenger from my computer and I went to msconfig to prevent msn messenger from automatically starting up when my computer does.

I have been to ctrl alt del and I cant see any processes that are suspicious .. in any case I darent touch them (the blonde that I am ill probably get rid of something important !!!) :oops:

The reason I know my virus is still active is that it installs this STUPID taskbar on IE, called the 888 taskbar. I have been to change/remove programs and removed it, but its still there.

I have been to hijack this and this is the report (at end of message)

I would really appreciate some help on this. I am not a complete computer dummy but things like this a way beyond my reach!!

Hi I've put the log at the end of this message.

I've managed to get things working.. I think. I have deleted some files manually, reinstalled msn messenger and there have been no problems with random messages to contacts etc. The 888 toolbar is no longer present. I got an update for my McAfee anti virus program and it is now working at full force.

I scanned using both McAfee and AVG free and there doesnt appear to be anything left.

But then again.. who knows?

My computer has started randomly crashing I dont know if this has anything to do with the virus or not. It goes to blue screen and then says that perhaps software i have installed has damaged my computer etc. Any ideas?

It only happens momentarily. I have a feeling it may be memory related as all it mentioned a problem with lack of memory.

Yet it also mentioned software,

I have cleaned a few things off my C drive since to leav a bit more space on the hard drive.

And the error message hasnt occured all day so Im assuming its fixed.

ah the error message appeared again. it wasnt possible to get a screen shot as it forces you to shut down the computer but I wrote down a few things before it totally shut down. (not all of it though)

Its a blue screen that reads

An error has been detected with the system. Windows must shut down (yada yada yada)

then it displays the problem as

and this was all i could read before it crashed.


When i start up again the cpu is very slow for a time and the icons dont appear properly for about 10 mins

Lack of memory itself shouldn't be a problem, but it may be lack of good memory. If a stick or part of a stick is bad it could be causing these problems when programs try to access addresses on that memory stick. We can start off by eliminating some unneeded programs. If this doesn't work by the time we're done you should post in the Hardware help forum.

First off, you should only be running one type of Antivirus software. I would reccomend uninstalling AVG, since its free, and you most likely paid for McAffee (at least I hope so ). You can leave AVG Antispyware, just uninstall the AntiVirus. Once you've done that, please post a new HijackThis log and we'll see what else can go.

I see a few entries in your log related to Symantec. Do you also have Norton (or Symantec) AntiVirus installed? If you do, you can uninstall that as well, along with fixing this entry:

hi you havent got back to me but i have since had loadddddddddddddds of problems. I wrote down the error message that keeps coming up on my screen. It has become more regular recently and generally once i start up my cpu it stays normal for 3 mins and then cue error message and shutdown.

The error message is
