Windows genuine disc?

edited December 2006 in Science & Tech
Right, I've got a bit of a problem and I hope someone on here can help me out. Up until yesterday I was running Windows XP using a copy. Everything's been fine but I've always missed the security that a genuine disc offers. A few weeks ago someone I know was cleaning out the tops of the kitchen units (they've recently moved in) when they found a genuine Windows XP sealed in it's sleave with the manual and attached product key. Hard to believe but true!
They gave it to me and yesterday I decided to reformatt my hard drive and put this in. The first thing I did was install some updates for added security. This went fine and it installed 18 updates. Nice one I thought. However when I tried to check for updates again Microsoft told me that this isn't a genuine disc even though the last 5 digits of the product key match those that they show.
I've just got in from work and once again successfully installed some updates. So what do I do now? I don't know whether to purchase Windows XP again or stay with the disc I've currently got.
