Computer freezes...

edited December 2006 in Science & Tech
Ive recently bought a new laptop, with windows xp etc. however, if I click on My computer, then c:, and then windows, the computer freezes, and comes up with an error screen (windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close).

I have tried re-installing windows, without deleteing anything, but to no joy.

Sometimes another box pops up telling me about Dr Watson Post Mortem Debugger not working.

I'm not particularly PC minded, so can someone help?

Thanks

Since you just purchased this laptop, I would simply return it to the store as defective. Anything that involves Dr. Watson is a serious issue, and not worth dealing with if you have the option of simply returning the computer. :(

If you still want to try to work with it, give us some more background. Tell us as much as you can about the computer and the circumstances under which it failed. :)

I hunted around a bit, and came across this, and tried this bit and it seems to have worked:

By accident, I solved the Dr. Watson error.

Step one - Create a new user in windows xp that is different from your logon. You must have administrator rights.

Step two - Copy and paste ALL of your directories, files, documents etc from your old user account into your new user account.

Step three - test to make sure that you have transferred every over.

Step four - delete your old user account.

Step five - right click on a file that previously activated the virus.

Step six - have a nice day because you will find that the virus is gone.

here's where I found the answer:
    www (dot)thenerdnetwork(dot)net/forums/viewtopic(dot)php?t=3086

    replace (dot) with .

So I all honesty, I assume it was a virus.

Two more steps not mentioned above:

Step seven - after virus is solved, delete all files from old user. Let's not leave the crapola on your hard drive.

Step eight - empty the recycle bin, then run a complete virus scan

What files would I need to delete off my hard drive?
    Thanks for your advice!:)

Before you do this make sure you have everything you want from the old user.

Logged in as the new, “clean” user with administrative rights, Go to Start> Control Panel> User Accounts. Then under “or pick an account to change” click on the name of the old user. You’ll get a new screen and the bottom option should be “Delete the account”. Click that, and the next screen will give you the option to “keep files” or “delete files”. Choose “delete files”.

Go and sin no more....
