Possible Virus?

Hello
I am having problems with my computer. (98 SE ) My husband has been working with it for the past week and is unable to get anywhere. The computer started by getting slow when it would boot. Then the last time we got it to boot, I tried to pull up a task list by the cont/alt/delete. WhenIhit that the power turned off on the computer. I tried restarting and it would start for a few seconds and then the power would cut again. When it did this, we would have to flip the switch on the back of the computer before it would let us start. Now it is not shutting off, but it will not boot in normal or safe mode or others my hubby has tried. It will either freeze on the Windows page or will eventually give a kernel error that it is missing a file to boot. My hubby also has linux on the computer and tried to get on with that, but we receive errors also. Any suggestions?

If you are receiving errors when trying to boot with Linux as well then I would suspect that you are having hardware problems. How old is this PC? I could point you to the hardware or emergency help forum if you like. If you can't boot into Windows to post a log for me then I think it best that you try to get help in one of the above mentioned forums.
