"this router"? What kind is it?
How often does this happen? Daily? Weekly? Monthly?
How do you get your connection back?

I mean basically all we know is that you have a problem with network connectivity, and need it fixed.... need more info. I almost ignored this post becuase of that.

wgr614 net gear v5, about everyday, sometims can go longer with out it happening. I can usually get it back by unplugging the rouyter, and turning off the modem. If that doens't work i restart the computer. other times jsut repairing the conneciton can work. Usually when this computer wont connect, the other com, puteres connecte to the router still work off of the conenction, i dont get it... but if u could help that would be great

So is this the deal? The router doesn't loose its connection to the internet, your computer looses its connection to the router? And there are other computers on the router and they dont loose their connection? Are the other computers connected wirelessly? Are you? And what happens when you say you "loose connection"? Does that mean you get "page cannot be displayed" or does that mean you get some other error?

I still don't know what's going on here.

It seems like he's saying that only one computer is having trouble, if so the problem may lie on that PC and not the router, but the best way to know is with the info mtrox needs. What computers are connecting with Ethernet and what computers are doing wireless, and which one's are having trouble.

If it's multiple computers having trouble with wireless, it sounds like your Net Gear is crapping out; mine, my friends, and my cousins Net Gear's have all crapped out in this similar way, it was painfully annoying rebooting the router on a daily basis, sometimes multiple times a day.

if i had to guess, idk say net gear is crapping out, brand new computer, and it did it on the last one too, i am pretty sure its the newest firmware available

I have similar troubles connected via ethernet to a wireless router by US Robotics. There are random, brief spells of connection loss that usually recover automatically but on the rare more annoying occasion, the router has to be restarted.

All the computers connected to the router lose the connection briefly whether it's through wireless or ethernet. The ethernet recovers much faster though, whereas with the wireless it takes about 5 minutes on average for the signal to return.

That one is a little easier to diagnose. If everyone looses the router at the same time, gotta be the router. BUT....you're sure they loose contact with the router? It isn't that the router looses the 'net for a second or two?

You're probably right mtrox but there have also been instances when ethernet is connected properly and wireless is down or vice versa. The ethernet breaks aren't as annoying as the wireless ones and any software I have running that depends on the internet connection isn't adversely affected.

Hmmm...the plot thickens, but I still don't trust that router. I'm sure you've uploaded the latest firmware?

Also, what wireless utility are you using? The Windows one? Check out this thread...scroll down to post 7 and skim it. A few of us traded notes on how the Windows utility (Wireless Zero Configuration) is known for dropping its connection.

Post your router logs here so we can ascertain as to what the problem might be. Do you have WAN pings disabled? Pings of death and/or twinge attacks hose my router once I enable my virtual app for torrent ports and/or other programs that need to have holes in the firewall. Are all of your ports closed, unless they are stealthed? Is the router in the vicinity of a microwave oven, 2.4ghz cordless phone, or any other device on the same frequency? Are your wireless pre-ambles set to short or long? What about transmit power, is it set high? Is the router near a power source of some kind that mey be giving major interference? Is the wireless NIC of the same brand as the router (does not always apply, but being consistent helps)?

I have more questions, but I think that will do for now...

Thank you for your contributions mtrox and zero.counter.

I have disabled the Wireless Zero Configuration and the wireless signal the laptop receives now relies entirely on the tool that comes with my wireless adapter. When WZC is disabled do you still see the windows system tray icon for the wireless signal ?

I didn't use the laptop very long to notice any improvement but the wireless signal was stable so I will leave it as it is and see how it performs when I want to use the laptop over more extended periods of time.

I will also post some router logs along with the configuration settings of the router for you zero.counter. I have 3 different wireless NICs because there are 3 PCs that receive the wireless connection but the laptop that uses the wireless NIC that came along with the router also suffers.

The router is not far from the TV in the living room (3-4 feet away) and we do have a microwave oven that is even closer but the kitchen wall separates the rooms the router and the microwave are in.

I will have to check on the other details regarding the router settings and as I said I will post them along with a sample from the router's log.

Nope, it goes away. Whatever third party utility you're using (meaning Dell, Intel ProSet, Linksys) should still be showing and be able to display the signal strength and help you configure and connect to new signals.

    Hi mtrox,

I appreciate your help and disabling the WZC has made a difference. I just have the Belking tool in the system tray so that I can monitor the wireless signal and other wireless settings but I wanted to make sure that it was right for the windows icon to disappear as well.

    Thanks again for your advice.
