Question about multiple boots?

edited December 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi, not sure if this is the right place or not. Here goes, when I start up the computer it boots up and everything fine. Now when I look at the taskbar at the icons where the clock is displayed, on different start-ups different ones are displayed. These are the ones I have noticed thus far:
1. all of the icons show up
2. about half show up
3. only the internet connect icon and wireless reception icons and quickset show up.

This seem to start when I stop the background process for a game, I did not stop any of the system, local, or network services. I am not sure what is going on, the computer runs fine and does not seem to be running slow or anything on any of the start-ups. Please let me know what other information you need, I am sure you need more, I just don't know what it would be. Thanks in advance.

Can you post a screenshot of what you mean?
  • edited December 2006
yep, give me a few minutes to get the shots and reboot.

    here they are:
    screenshot3.gif

    screenshot2.gif

    screenshot1.gif

In the last one you'll see the outlook icon, I opened that and that is why it isn't in the other screen shots. As for why different things pop in there at different start up I don't know.

I've seen that on mine. It happens after a major hic-up. Explorer.exe stops, everything disappears except my wallpaper, XP figures out life and restarts explorer.exe, and only half my icons show up down in the sys tray. If I pull up task manager all the processes are still running, but the ones that ususally display an icon don't show one. It only gets fixed after I reboot. I've tried stopping explorer.exe and restarting it....no help.

Yeah, tasks that explicitly rely on explorer.exe for rendering the system tray icon lose their shell hook when explorer.exe goes away. Put simply, the programs don't know how to reactivate the icon without restarting the program.

hmmm, mine just does it. I am not having any problems other than the icons not showing or showing up at different times.

I have noticed one thing, at shut down, I get the message:
    "Sonic DLA: updating media"
It flashes very quickly on the screen, I had to use my digital video camero to record it and then play it back in very slow motion so that I could even see what it was.

Okay So the Icons that are not consistent are:

    EA Games Client
    Device Manager/Removal Manager
    Realtime player?
    QuickTime
    Printer settings
and I cannot identify the one with the 'E' on it.

    Can you confirm these?

Each time you took these shots did you wait for the computer to finish loading all of it's processes before stopping to take the shot (or do anything else (like open outlook))?

It seems like you have a lot of programs set to run as resident. Perhaps the real issue is that you have let too many programs set themselves up like this. Do you want help removing some of these resident processes?

Yes, those and my norton internet security one.

Yea I don't use the following:
    real one player
    safely remove hardware
    "e" is dell support icon
    musicmatch jukebox icon

The only ones I use are the internet connection, 2wire, speaker, bluetooth and wireless radio. Any help would be great.

Mach, close down all your browsers and windows explorers, then run HJT and just do a scan this time. Then check the boxes by these items, then click the “Fix Checked” button. Then reboot and make sure that Dell printer still works. We can undo it if I got too aggressive there.

No I think you're probably good now. You should see fewer icons down in the sys tray, and it should start a little faster...esp with that adobe thing not running. I would also guess you don't see that Sonic update message when you shut down now?
  • edited December 2006
no i didn't see when it shut down. it flashes so quick though its easy to miss, I don't think it was there though. The only icons now are internet connections, wireless and bluetooth radio. Thanks, I guess I will see what happens on a few startup and report back if it starts acting funny again.

Yea I don't know that we solved your main problem with the erratic icons. I know you're running cleaner now. Most of what we disabled was little programs running in the background 24/7 on the off-chance there is some update for their little corner of the world. And the Adobe thing is just a piece of Adobe that starts all the time so you don't notice how big and slow Adobe Reader starts up. Prob is it slows down everything else.
  • edited December 2006
okay, I don't guess there is any viruses or anything like on my pc, I run Norton Internet Security and regular virus scans.

Judging from that log it looked real clean....can't always tell that way but an awful lot of "crap" will show up in a HJT log.

okay, I appreciate you looking at it. I will see what it does over the next couple of days and post back, thanks again.
