[Solved]Help wanted with virus delivered via MSN Messnger

Hi There

We've picked up a virus on our PC which was delivered via a click though on an MSN message.

I believe the main problem originally was a file called wininstall.exe and the first symptom was an 888 toolbar and multiple pop ups.

I've installed Kaspersky anti-virus software since the incident and followed the instructions posted in the sticky by Trogan. I believe the PC is still infected and the main remianing symptom is multiple pop ups when using MSN Messenger and a lot of spyware gets re-installed.

I'd be very grateful for any help you can give me and have posted details of my hijackthis log and what I have done to try to clean up, along with the relevant logs below.

Thanks in advance.

In my latest attempt to clean up I have:

1. Run Kaspersky at start up and its notified me that all threats have been neutralised- the log is in the file attached.

2. Run Ad-aware SE Personal and Spybot. Ad-aware found 3 low risk cookies which I deleted, Spybot found nothing.

3. Run Panda Activscan which found three low risk cookies which I deleted. Log below

Disabling the Messenger Service is a good idea in any case, but it's not going to stop viruses from MSN Messenger or any other IM program. They are totally different things. ;)

Fingers Crossed! We are by far the best team in the premiership at the moment and Chelsea are doing all the chasing, which is good. :D

    Please do the following...

You have HijackThis on the D: Drive. Its best to place it where your OS is installed, and in your case that looks to be the C: Drive.

    Next...

Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation) <-- You don't have Norton, so this is not needed
    MediaTickets by OIN

Remove these unless you know what they are
    cat-ss-01 Screen Saver
    cat-ss-03 Screen Saver

    Next...

    Download and run the OiUninstaller:
    http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller if needed

    Next...

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IpWins] C:\Program Files\ipwins\ipwins.exe

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    - Click Fix Checked
    Close HiajckThis

    Next...

Find and Delete the following Folder in RED, if present:

    C:\Program Files\ipwins

Reboot your computer and post a new HijackThis log

    Hi Trogan

I'm afraid i've had a few problems following these instructions:

LiveReg doesn't appear on the add / remove list and when I try to remove Mediatickets I get an Uninstall Error saying it may have been removed already and asking whether or not I want to remove it from the add / remove list. I have left in it the list for now.

When I click to remove the the Cat-ss screensavers, nothing happens at all.

When I try to download OIuninstaller, Kaspersky blocks it because it contains adware Win32.mediatickets.

    thanks

    Hi Trogan

I've followed the instructions in your message plus i've deleted the ipwins entry using HiJack this as you suggested in the previous message.

I've posted the hijack this log below.

Just for info, before i disabled Kaspersky to allow the OIuninstall dowload it logged this message.

    detected: adware not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.MediaTickets.n URL: http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe//data0002//UPX
    detected: adware not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.MediaTickets.n File: C:\DOCUME~1\Mansel\LOCALS~1\Temp\UE.exe//UPX

Even after disabling Kaspersky, I still couldnt dowload the file until I removed outerinfo.com and *outerinfo from the restricted site list in internet explorer.

    Thanks

That is fine. Your log is clean so lets run a few scans...

You may wish to Print or Save the following instructions, as the internet will not be available once in Safe Mode!

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
    • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
    • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
    • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
      • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.

      • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
    • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
    • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    Once in Safe Mode:

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
    • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.

      • Under How to act?
        • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
      • Under How to scan?
        • All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Possibly unwanted software:

      • Under Reports:
        • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
      • Under What to scan?
        • Select Scan every file.
    • Click on the Scan tab.
    • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
    • Let the program scan the machine.
    • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
      • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
        scanavgjk2.jpg

      • Click the Save Report as button.
      • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
    Reboot back into Normal Mode

Please do an online scan with Panda ActiveScan

    - Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province

    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

    Please post the following...

    Hi Trogan

Everything's working out fine (apart from the Chelsea result) but the scans are taking some time and will probably need to run overnight. I'll post the logs tomorrow once they are done.

Thanks again for all the help

Log looks clean. How is the computer?
  • edited December 2006
    Hi

It seems to be okay. To be honest, I havent been using it very much while we've been trying to get this sorted. My daughter has been on the internet a little and she tells me that she hasnt seen any problems so it sounds as though you have solved my problem.

If there's any justice in the world, Man Utd will now go on to win the Premiership as a reward for your good deed.

Thanks very much for your help.

    Hi Trogan

Yes - I've been on the PC quite a lot today and the performance is fine. I think we can say its resolved.

    Thank you very very much!
