[resolved]I'd like your opinions about the condition of my other pc

Hello there,

first of all I'd like to thank you for taking the time to discuss an earlier post of mine. I have 2 computers: a main (about which I am posting this) and a lamer, older, secondary pc (about which was my earlier post). I try to keep my main pc more clean and I browse more "safely".

Win XP sp2, firefox 2, spybot s&d, lavasoft ad-aware, avg free 7.5, avg antispyware 7.5 are updated daily and generally speaking are a-ok and whenever I scan my pc with them, I find no error. My problem is that one day ago and for no apparent reason both firefox and IE 2 were extremely slow and couldn't complete a simple 5 MB download (which should be a matter of 20 seconds under normal conditions). Today things are ok again. Now that probably seems a problem from my isp, but since I've never had my hijackthis log checked, could someone take some minutes and give me your (his) opinion when it's convenient (this is not an urgent matter of course).

spybot s&d doesn't find anything suspicious (red) in its complete search and neither does lavasoft's ad-aware. I'll follow up with the log of hijackthis and the rapport.txt

It doesn't seem to be something urgent, or even important, so you can answer if and when it's convenient to you. It probably is a simple check-up of my desktop's health.

And another question: what's the deal with the multiple svchost.exe files reported to run simultaneously in windows' task manager?
I get 7: 4 by SYSTEM, 2 by NETWORK SERVICE and 1 by LOCAL SERVICE. Is that normal?

thanks for your time in advance

hi fontas, on your other thread..would you like me to mark that as resolved the 1 you gave a link to? also svchost is a windows process used by all aspects of it that's why there's so many running at one time! :)

Yes j, the other issue is certainly resolved.

As for this, it happened again late at the same time in the same way - at late hours my internet access just slows down to speeds slower of a simple dialup. This lasts for several hours, but returns to normal next morning. It obviously has to do with my isp.

Still, could someone, when convenient, take the time and check up on the condition of these logs?

edit: I recently installed Battlefield 2142. The problem occurs from late afternoon (and that's when I start playing the game) and lasts until the early hours - it is gone in the morning. What's weird is that this game (which is quite heavy in terms of its requirements of an internet connection) plays very smoothly with unnoticeable lag. On the other hand, Firefox, Internet Explorer and DC++ are impossible to run because of extremely high latency and very low download & upload speeds. The same happens with World of Warcraft: I either can't log in, or when I can, the lag is very high and I get disconnected immediately.

The problem persists after reboots of my pc and my router. I simply have to wait until the next morning for this "glitch" to disappear. My isp claim that all is ok with them and my connection; so, if this game is the only application that can enjoy high speed during this period of the day with this "glitch" ... then what?

Please download, install, and update AVG anti-spyware
    1. Load AVG AS and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
    2. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    3. Close AVG AS. Do not run it yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
    • In Safe Mode, load AVG AS and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
    • AVG AS will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
    • Restart back into Normal Mode.

Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the AVG log and the new HijackThis log.

What's strange is that *both* my pcs have the same problem (this massive slowdown in internet speeds for that period of the day - every day). I don't usually share any data between these two; the only instance I recall is emailing myself firefox's bookmarks to upload from my one pc to the other.

As for browsing, I really don't check anything that weird or dangerous. This would point me to the direction of my ISP having technical issues in my area/doing maintenance/whatever; but they don't comment on this since they are understaffed these days. Or it could be a problem of the hub between my pcs.

Would there be some point in posting the relevant results from my other pc as well? I have them handy.

since both your PC's are having same internet issues it could very well be something with your ISP, try this->You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

normal mode is fine..safe mode actually doesn't give me everything I need to see so you did fine..do you recognize this entry>R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = fritz.box ?
  • edited December 2006
"Fritz box" is the name of my modem/router - a name which appears several times in my HJT log.

Do you find this particular line suspicious and something that may explain my massive lag for a large period every day? Or was it this name you wanted me to clarify?

oh ok..just to clarify the *name*...have you cleared out your temp files?
  • edited December 2006
No, I haven't. Should I? Using ATF cleaner?
  • jmoney3457jmoney3457 Maine
    edited December 2006
yep :) let me know how that goes
  • edited January 2007
I did use ATF cleaner to thoroughly clean all my caches. Changes in my internet connection are imperceptible, so apparently it's not a spyware problem.

Thank you for your time and patience with this matter.

glad to hear it:) as full caches can very much hinder your 'net speed..be sure to clear them out every week or every other at the very least as it can bog down your system/internet speed and malware can also hide in there i'll mark this resolved please send a pm to the moderating team to have this topic reopened, this only applies to the topic starter, everyone else begin a new thread:)
