Why do CD and DVD drives sometimes spin discs for no reason?

edited January 2007 in Hardware
This is a question i've had in the back of my mind for some time. Why is it that whenever I boot my computer up with a CD in my CD drive it will spin it for several minutes when I didn't ask for access or anything. I've noticed this for as long as I can remember with several different drives and computers. It also seems to happen when I open certain programs that should have nothing to do with the disc (like Windows Media Player). Is there a way to stop this?

Caching the disc's title/icon/contents/type if applicable. No way to stop it.

Couple of things to try if this is annoying:
1, Remove the cd/dvd from the boot-order in the bios totally.

2, ISO the cd/dvd in question if you must have access to it at all times and use Daemon tools as a virtual drive

    3, Remove the cd/dvd entirely
