I admit defeat. I have been trying to solve this for months. On my son's computer (Windows XP Pro, SP2), every windows update fails. There are currently 18 updates that will not install, and I can't find a common thread amongst them. In a concessionary move, I finally did a windows repair install, which reset ALL windows updates post SP2, and it STILL doesn't work.

here's a list of the updates that fail:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB925454)
Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP (KB917734)
Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)
Security Update for Windows Media Player Plug-in (KB911564)
The following security updates for Windows XP:
KB911280
KB911562
KB920685
KB921398
KB922616
KB922819
KB923414
KB923689
KB923980
KB924191
KB924270
KB924496
KB900485
and finally, Internet Explorer 7

I've tried manually installing Windows Media Player 10 and 11, as well as manual IE7, and they all fail.

Help!

Check if the Cryptographic service is running as well. Also, run the Windows Update portion of the program known as "DAF" (Dial-a-fix).

    Hey Primesuspect
Just curious. Did you get this one figured out? I'd be interested to know what the resolution is.

    Hey guys.

Neither thing worked. The problem is almost certainly with Windows Media Player. If the patch has anything to do with WMP, it fails, and also is preventing other non-media related patches from installing.

I tried manually installing WMP 11. This is the weird part: It says it succeeded. I reboot and run WMP and the "Welcome to Windows Media Player 10" wizard comes up. Everytime I run WMP, it is version 10 and it acts like it's the first time it's ever been run.

I've tried uninstalling WMP10 from the A/R programs Cp, and it pops up with the "WMP rollback utility", which just plain doesn't work.

WMP10 is somehow corrupt. Any hints? :D

Get Dial-A-Fix from the bottom of this page. Hit the double green check mark button, run all the fixes. Hit the hammer button, run all the fixes one by one. Go back and run all the fixes. Reboot.

//EDIT: We're doing all the fixes, and I'm reposting this tool to bolster its searchability. This tool is great.

There are currently 18 updates that will not install, and I can't find a common thread amongst them.

It's possible that you may find a common thread by using Method 2 listed below.

    From Microsoft:

    Method 1.

View your installation history on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site
    Locate the installation error
    1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
    2. On the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site, click Review your update history.
    3. In the status column for the unsuccessful update, click the red X.

A new window opens that displays the installation error.

Search for the installation error in the Windows Update Troubleshooter
    1. Click Find Solutions.
    2. Type the error message that appears in the window that opened in step 3 of "Locate the installation error."
    3. Click Search.

Search for the installation error in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
    1. Click Go to Knowledge Base Articles.
    2. Search for the error message you received.

    Method 2.

Locate the installation log file on your computer
Most operating system updates use Package Installer for Windows (Update.exe). The installation creates a default log file that records successes and failures in the %systemroot%\KB######.log file.

Note ###### is the number of a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

For example, if the package that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 12345 is not successfully installed, click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\KB12345.log, and then click OK to troubleshoot the problem.

Note Operating system service packs create the %systemroot%\Svcpack.log file during installation.

Hope this has helped in some small way :)
