Windows Installer Problems

edited February 2007 in Science & Tech
To start off, Windows Updates can't install Windows Installer 3.1. "Access denied" ... etc appear. I've researched that particular problem and tried every fix recommended to others. I've also tried installing WI3.1 manually...but I get the same 'access denied' ...dialog boxes.

Now, when I try to install ANYTHING it blanks out into a blue screen with 'Dumping Physical Memory To Disk." Which restarts the computer.
I have so important programs to install right now, but can't due to this extremely obnoxious problem.

Can anyone help??

    Hello Patrick
    Welcome to Short Media!

The first things to come to mind for me are memory and malware.

An easy step would be to test your memory to rule that out (or in).
If you haven't tested your memory already, please go here and download MEMTEST86. Create a bootable media w/ it and run a thorough test your RAM. Let it run for a while to give it a good work out.

Be sure to come back here and let us know what happened or if you have any other questions, info., etc.

I ran through the RAM test [thanks for that BTW]
    I didn't see any problems.

However, I did find a free utility that fixes windows updates/windows installer problems, Call Dual-A-Fix. I did that, restarted, and successfully installed Windows Installer 3.1 manually [not via auto-updates] (I'm not saying updates didn't work).

    Installer programs are fine now.

Except for the Windows Media Player 11 installer which gives me a blue screen which sights lzx32.exe (or something) as the problem file, but after it restarts I can't find it on my system.

Oh well, I can live without 11 till I get Vista.

    Thanks for the support!

I believe you're referring to Dial-A-Fix. Yes, that's a very handy utility package.

Hmmmm! I'm in a bit of a hurry right now. Go to your favorite search engine and run a search on "lzx32.exe" - see what you come up w/. Be sure to get back to us and let us know.

I make it a habit to never jump on the new OS band wagon (not for my own systems anyway) I always wait until some of the bugs are fleshed (flushed too!) out. To that end, I'd recommend you wait about a year afer Vista has hit the streets before installing it on your own computer(s). As for WMP 11, I loaded it on one of my systems and promptly restored my system back to it's state prior to installing WPM 11 (I use HDD imaging to do this. If you're interested re: what that entails, let us know) I found WMP 11 to be even more of a resource hog than its predecessor and way too busy for my taste. But I'm stengy when it comes to what I'll let apps get away w/ on my systems anyway.... :hrm:

    Hi, I'm back!

I'd just like to thank you again for your help.

The lzx32.sys file I was complaining about was caused by some backdoor trojan. I can be fixed with a program called "rustbfix"
I'm now able to install programs without getting a blue screen and a memory dump.

 Nice job USA. Thanks for letting us know what worked for you. Someone will Google over to this with the exact same problem some day.

You can just never rule out a virus/trojan/malware thing. They can screw with the weirdest things.
