Hello darrinjackson. Welcome to Short Media!

Sounds as though there is a password set on your system BIOS. Unfortunately, until that password is cleared, you will not be able to operate your computer.

If you do not know the password then you must do something called "clear the system CMOS". You can call Dell support (if the computer is still in warranty) and they'll step you through doing this. Or, you can do it by yourself.

    Shut down your computer.
Disconnect all cables and cords from the back and front.
    Open the clamshell case.

Follow these instructions to clear the Dimension 8200 CMOS:

Pterocarpous basically gave you all the info you'll need. The systems BIOS has been setup to require a password in order to continue. :D

My only worry is how the password was set. I would ask your Son if he recalls setting the password.

I've seen this a lot. In most cases, the user will not have any idea when or why a password was set or what it's for for that matter...much less the password. Particularly if the computer has changed hands or been shelved for an extended period of time as in this case. It's usually an innocent mistake or, over time, it's just plain been forgotten... In any case, I'm sure it's a benign problem and clearing the CMOS will set him merrily on his way.
