Roxio Easy Media Freeze

Hi Folks,

Hopefully somebody might be able to help. I am using Easy Media Creator basic DVD Home. It works fine with good results but sometimes it just locks up. If I go to end programmes it will not show up and the only way I can get it going again is to restart my PC. I have downloaded the updates for this programme and I have reinstalled it, but to no avail. This software came with my DVD writer.

Thanks in advance

P.S. I hope this tread is appropriate for this forum.

Hi Stephen
Yes, this is the appropriate forum for your thread (General Software).

Are you experiencing any other hardware or software issues w/ your computer (including w/ your DVD writer)?

Exactly what are you doing w/ EMC DVD Home when it crashes?
(The more details the better)

Does it crash during the same process every time?

Are any other applications (incl. your OS) not working properly at times?

Hi Pterocarpous, Thanks for you swift reply.

I don't seem to be experiencing any other software problems right now.

What happens with EMC DVD Home is as follows:
If for example I am backing up a dvd it will perform the task perfectly then I close the programme, try to reopen it and it opens the main menu page of Roxio but then will not open the sub menu of disc copier without I restarting the PC. When closing down a popup tells me it is ending programme Disc Copier. I have tried closing it in task manager prior to shut down but it never shows up as running. Yesterday I was editing a home movie in sub-menu Create dvd and after capture it just kept freezing, again nothing in task manager and after restart it will operate again for a while.

Its seems to crash with all processes.

All other applications seem to be working fine.

Something else that might be helpful:

I did have Nero 6 installed but I read that these two programmes don't get on together so I unistalled it with add/remove programmes. Its not that I don't like Nero its just I prefer Roxio, I find it a lot easier to work with.

To be fair Roxio has never really worked perfectly, but has got worse in the last few weeks.

Sorry if all this goes on a bit, but I hope It helps.

Thanks in advance.

PS I have a bug of some sort in Outlook Express (see tread on this forum) which developed last night. I can't see any connection realy as the Roxio problem is there with quite a while, but you never know.

I have Nero and EMC on my systems and haven't had any problems. However, I'm a very rudimentary user when it comes to those suites. Just the basics. Nothing fancy. So, I migt not be attempting tasks that would make an incompatibility between Nero and EMC apparent.

Not at all! The rule of thumb around here is the more details the better.

Couldn't find it stephen. Could you give us a link to the thread?

Good descriptions. Nice detail. Very helpful. Thankyou!
You're aside re: Nero & EMC bumping heads is intriguing. I don't know 'bout Roxio, but I do know Nero has some clean tools available. Go to their support page and look for their downloads. If I remember correctly, you can find them there. You might want to check Roxio's site, too and look for any similar tools that would aid in excising the remnants of the suite from your file system and registry. What I recommend is you get both those programs thoroughly excised outta your file system and registry then re-install EMC.

A handy (and free) tool to aid in cleaning up is called CCleaner. Run a couple of passes of it, too.

To be sure, that memory isn't the culprit, how 'bout giving your memory a goin' over.

Please go here and download MEMTEST86. Create a bootable media w/ it and boot into the diagnostic off of a system restart (or start) (It doesn't run in the OS GUI)

Hi Pterocarpous, Thanks for your reply.

OK I am going to do all you have suggested and let you know how I get on.

With regards to my Outlook Express Tread I would be really greatful if you would have a look at it for me, if its not too much trouble. I an not sure how to place a link so I just c&p the contents of the tread for you to see it.
( I hope I haven't broken any rules)

I have just developed a problem with Outlook Express which I am using with SpamBully 4, when I try to open OE it displays the following error:

Msimn.exe
An error occurred in the application

If I exit the error, OE opens but without the spam filter. In actual fact spambully will not open at all.

If anyone can help it would be great.

I am using AVG 7.5 and I have just realised that it may also be scanning e-mails, I am not sure if that’s a problem or not.

Thanks again.

You aren't breaking any rules. We do want to make sure that we always keep different topics seperated into their own threads. If we mix topics in one thread then it gets confusing to follow and to provide support. So, to that end, I will hold off on commenting on your OE issue until I'm in the proper thread.

What is the title of your "Thread" that is about your Outlook Express issue?

Do you know what "Forum" it is in? (For example, we are in the "General Software" forum right now.)

Sorry about that, I fully understand where you are coming from, its makes a lot of sense.
I possible should have it in this section anyway. Probably explains why I didn’t get any reply.

I will have a look at it to see if it fits in that forum. If not I'll ask to have it moved to the General Software forum.

Wow! Ireland! Isn't that amazing how we can communicate w/ people across the globe? I've been around the Internet for a v-e-r-y long time and I s-t-i-l-l find that amazing.
Soooo, what's it like there this time of year? Ya'll (a contraction for the expression "you" + "all" commonly used in the Southern States of the USA) ever have any snow there or just lots an' lots of rain?

Hi Pterocarpous,

I have taken your advice and Uninstalled Nero and Roxio and downloaded Nero cleaner and Roxio Zapper and ran both of them. I use Ccleaner a lot so I ran this and I also use registry mechanic, spybot s&d and AddAware so I ran those as well and removed everything they found.

I downloaded the memory diagnosis program you mentioned and read the tutorial with it and to be honest I just did not have the courage to take it on.

I have reinstalled Roxio and made a short backup with it and so far it is working OK. I always thought that once something was uninstalled in add/remove programs it completely removed everything, obviously not the case.

Thanks for your help on this one and I will see how it goes.

I got your message Re: Outlook Express bug and it seems to now be in the General Hardware section, do I have to do anything to move it?

This time of year in Ireland its cold and yes we get a looooooooooot of Rain, little or no snow in the south a little as you move more North. Little daylight, it dawns at about 8.15am and is dark by 4.45pm. December and January are our worst months in weather. But Summer is on its way.

Again thanks for all your help.

Terrific. That may have been the ticket.
stephen wrote:

HEC! No! It is the exception when I run across a program that does a passable job of removing its tracks during the course of an uninstall. That's why we need so much support software in the form of registry utilities, cleaner utilities, and 3rd party uninstallers, etc. As a rule of thumb, after you've uninstalled a program normally, it's a good idea to run your cleaner and registry utilities to try and clean up after it as best you can. This is an ongoing battle w/ no end in sight from where I'm sitting.

Sounds dreary but that's how you end up w/ all those lush greens and fields and such right?

Hello stephen. I am including here an article whose target audience is the novice computer user. It provides instructions for testing your computer's hard disk drive and main memory.

It seems like a lot to absorb, I know, but just approach it with the "eat an elephant a bite at a time" attitude and you'll do just fine.

When you have finished or if you have any questions, etc. during the course of this process, just post back here. We'll help you through it & answer any questions you might have.

TESTING YOUR COMPUTER’S MAIN MEMORY AND HARD DISK DRIVE

You may find terms in this article that you are not familiar with. Most of them are explained here in the “WHAT IS or WHAT IS A/AN…?” section. However, if you find words or terms that are not covered in this section or if you need further explanation, please, consult one or more of the following:

ONLINE REFERENCES:
Webopedia.com, Whatis.com, Wikipedia.org, Wiktionary.org

WHAT IS or WHAT IS A/AN…?
ARCHIVE (COMPRESSED) FILE, BIOS, BOOT or BOOTABLE, CD (or DVD) WRITER, COMPATIBLE, DEVICE, FAQ, FREEWARE, HARD DISK DRIVE (HDD), MAIN MEMORY (RAM), MOTHER (MAIN) BOARD, ISO IMAGE FILE, OPERATING SYSTEM , UTILITY, ZIP FILE

ISO File:
To extract an ISO file and "burn" or "write" it to a CD writable or DVD writable disc, please, download and run BurnCDCC Free ISO Utility. The program requires no actual “installation”. Instructions for using the utility are included in a file called README.TXT:
Note: (1) If you are running Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000, you must have 3rd party software (software that is not included with your operating system) installed in order to “burn” or write to a writable CD or DVD disc. (2) Regardless of the operating system, you must have a CD or DVD writer installed in order to write to CDs or DVDs.

ZIP File:
If you are running Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000 and you do not have an “archive” or “compression” utility installed that can manage “ZIP” files, please, proceed w/ these steps. (Note, if you are running Windows XP or Windows MCE, you will not need to install an “archive” utility as one is built into the operating system.):
Please, download and install an "archive" (compression) utility that is "compatible" with your operating system. One freeware archive utility is CAM UNZIP. It is compatible with older operating systems like Windows 98 and Windows ME as well as later operating systems.
If you are running Windows 98 or 2000, reboot your computer
Use CAM UNZIP to open the “zipped” files that you have downloaded

MAIN MEMORY Test:
Download the freeware utility MEMTEST86
Create a bootable CD or floppy diskette (depending upon the version you chose to download)
Place the media in the system you wish to test and reboot or start the computer.
Let the test run for a period of time. Over night is best.
Note: If your system does not boot to the CD or floppy diskette you inserted, then you may need to change the DEVICE BOOT ORDER PRIORITY in your system BIOS. If you do not know how to do this, consult your motherboard manual or, if you do not have this, let us know and we will help you.

HARD DISK DRIVE Test:
Download Seagate’s Seatools 3.02.04 HDD diagnostic Utility.
This utility is only available as an CD ISO image file. (for CD only – not floppy diskette)
-OR-
Download Maxtor PowerMax 4.23 HDD diagnostic utility
floppy diskette version or CD ISO image version
-OR-
Download Hitachi Hard Disk Drive Fitness Test (DFT)
Download the “Diskette Creator for Windows OS” version if you wish to create a bootable floppy diskette
Download the “CD Image” (this is an ISO file) version if you wish to create a bootable CD.
Create a bootable diskette or CD with the file you downloaded
Insert the diskette or CD into the floppy or CD drive of the computer you wish to test then reboot or start the computer
Test your HDD
Note: If your system does not boot to the CD or floppy diskette you inserted, then you may need to change the DEVICE BOOT ORDER PRIORITY in your system BIOS. If you do not know how to do this, let us know and we will help you.

That's absolutely the right thing to do. You never want to be in a hurry or in anyway pressed for time when doing this kinda stuff. You need to have a lot of patience in your pockets and, as I said, time. So, to that end, take your time and get back to us when you're ready. We'll be here.
