Outlook Express bug

Hi all,

I have just developed a problem with Outlook Express which I am using with SpamBully 4, when I try to open OE it displays the following error:

Msimn.exe
An error occurred in the application

If I exit the error, OE opens but without the spam filter. In actual fact spambully will not open at all.

If anyone can help it would be great.

I am using AVG 7.5 and I have just realised that it may also be scanning e-mails, I am not sure if that’s a problem or not.

Thanks in advance

    Hello Stephen
I don't think, on 1st glance, that this is a malware issue. I've asked that the thread be moved to General Software.

    See ya there!

I saw your HijackThis Log (HJT) and didn't see anything untoward there.

"Msimn.exe" is Outlook Express' executable - the file the program is opened with.

The first thing we need to do is to see if we can get OE working by itself - IOW without spam filtering or AV scanning. To that end, you will need to eliminate variables first - in this case, SpamBully & AVG email scanning.

Can you get into SpamBully's UI (User Interface) without opening OE?
If so, go into SpamBully's properties and see if you can disable it.
We may have to disable a service as well but let's see how this goes first.
Do the same w/ AVG - disable email scanning.
Reboot your computer and try OE again.

    Let's see what happens.

    Hi again,

You must have me mixed up with someone else I didn’t post a log, but having said that i wouldn’t mind if you could have a look at mine sometime just to see if everything is ok. I do know that its run with a program called Hijackthis which I have downloaded so if you can tell me what to do next.

Ok Pterocarpous, I have managed to switch off Spambully and Avg e-mail scanning (In order to turn off avg e-mail scanner you need to reinstall the program and uncheck e-mail scanning otherwise it turns on automatically after reboot) Outlook Express is now working perfectly on its own, no pop up error or anything like that. The error that was showing up with OE is now showing up if I try to open spambully on its own so the problem seems to be there. I was going to reinstall spambully but I decided to wait for the nod from you first.

    Thanks in Advance

I don't think your problem is related to malware, however, if you'd like someone to give your HJT a gander, you are more than welcome to post it on our Spyware & Virus Removal forum.

Good job! I don't think there'll be any need to futz with your AV program as it appears you've found the culprit. Uninstalling your SpamBully software then re-installing it is a good idea. I checked SpamBully's web site and didn't find any FAQs or a dedicated support page. They do, however, have a forum where you might find more information and help re: SpamBully-specific issues.

Let us know how it goes, ok?

    Hi Pterocarpous,

Thanks for the reply and the links.

The forum link for spambully, with some searching turned up a problem exactly the same as mine posted on the 2nd of January so I have stuck my head in to let them know I am experiencing the same problems. I will see what comes up there and let you know.

Thanks again, you have been more that helpful.
