What's the problem with this? Open(0)?

It only happened recently. I plugged in my external HDD to a USB port, and it appeared in 'My Computer'. When i double-clicked on the drive to access it, i got a "K:\ Access is Denied" problem. On right-clicking to show the menu of options, i noticed that I've got 2 'Open' commands. The first option should be Open, followed by AutoPlay and so on right? Mine right now has Open(0) as the 1st option, followed by Autoplay, then Search, and finally another Open. What is wrong? When I try to open the drive using the Open(0) option, i get the same message. Only the 2nd 'Open' works. I tried using another USB port but it had the same problem. Someone help?

    Wow! That's a puzzler! :scratch:

    (1) Is this an off-the-shelf (manufactured all-in-one) external HDD or did you build it w/ a HDD + HDD enclosure?
    A lot of the off-the-shelf external HDDs come w/ (unnecessary) software built-in or pre-installed.
    The first thing I usually do w/ one is to reformat it (NTFS).

    (2) Can you access it in COMPUTER MANAGEMENT?

    (3) If so, can you format it there? (Warning! Attempt this ONLY if there's nothing on it you want to save!!)

    (4) Have you tried connecting the enclosure to another computer's USB port?

    ====================================

    EDIT:
    I made the assumption that this was a new external HDD. Having re-read your initial post, it doesn't look as though this is the case.

    If you were previously able to access this HDD AND you get the same results w/ the external HDD connected to a different computer....

    (5) Can you remove the HDD from the enclosure and install it into a desktop system (as a 2nd, etc. HDD) and see if its contents are viewable there?

    If this is the case then you have a bad enclosure.

    If not, I recommend you run the manufacturer's HDD diagnostics on the drive next.

    Formatting is something I CAN'T do. 80gB worth of stuff in there that are very important. LoL. I can't burn them out since they're not complete too.

    It doesn't seem like my files are affected though...

    By bad enclosure do u mean the casing?

    :eek2: Definetly not! So, what about answers to the remaining questions? :nudge:

    Sorry, I missed your question in my last post. That's correct, the HDD inside is just a standard HDD like one you'd install in your desktop computer. The "enclosure" is the unit (case, etc.) that the HDD is mounted in. If this is one you purchased pre-built by the manufacturer, getting inside might be a bit tricky but it can be done. Try the other steps first to rule out the issue having anything to do w/ your computer rather than the external HDD.

    EDIT - Re-read post # 3 ::
    Your files aren't affected??? You can get to your files on the external HDD in question? If that's the case, my apologies. I misinterpreted your original post. I thought you were unable to access the HDD.

    So you're just referring to the odd menu, yes?

    I'd still try plugging it in to a different computer and see if the symptoms are the same there. We need to know if the issue "follows" the HDD or if it only appears when the HDD is connected to the original computer you had seen the odd menu on.

    Well, tried plugging it into around 6-7 different PCs and 2 laptops. Same thing. :D

    Then you know it's the device. Without more information (e.g. answers to the questions asked of you in posts # 2 and # 5), I really can't advise you beyond this point.

    If you could answer the questions, we could help you further if you like.

    Okay. Here's something that I find weird, so i'd like to check it out. In my external HDD, i recently found 'hidden' folders and files. Recycled (Folder), Recycler (File Folder), autorun.inf (Setup Information), Thumbs.db (Database File), System Volume Information (File Folder), and i asked my AntiVir Guard to block Boot.exe, which was classified off as a Trojan (TR/Ciador.VB.A) by AntiVir Guard.

    Opened autorun.inf with notepad and it the following in it:

    [autorun]
    shellexecute=Recycled\ctfmon.exe
    shell\Open(&0)\command=Recycled\ctfmon.exe
    shell=Open(&0)

    The Recycled folder is empty, but i found the following files in the Recycler (please refer to attached Screenshot.)

    Tell me, are these files supposed to be in a external HDD? If not, what should I do to them?

    Hi!

    Well your'e on the right way:) It's a virus, called, if i'm not mistaken, "Win32:Trojan-gen {VB}". So what you need to do is just deleting autorun.inf files from all of your harddrives. Do the following:
    1. Have your computer scaned by antivirus and delete all suspectable exe's
    2. Remove autorun.inf files from all of your harddrives manually
    3. Restart the computer
    4. Enjoy it:)

    That worked for me.

    Gee...thanks..Hope it didn't manage to spread itself over to my PC... :D

    Delete all autorun.inf files...as in really ALL of them? no matter what folder they're in?

    I ran a search on my PC for all files with the name 'autorun'. Here're the results (in thumbnail). Which do i delete? My portable HDD's fine now. Just checking up my main PC.
