Options
Problems with ICS and Gateways magically appearing.
Welp first off let me lay this all out.
One day was doing my usual 3-4 hour jaunt on my pc when I shut it down and restarted I heard a midi medley(like 4 notes) come from my pc speaker. Funny thing is that I have never heard anything come from it.
I would like to consider myself secure so this caused major panic. When panic strikes combating an invasion I disconnect instantly from the net.
I have NIS 2006 and AVG 7.1.410. Started performing full scans, nothing detected. Started going through everything and noted a gateway added in network connections. I clicked on it and a property box would flash for a second then disappear. Did an advanced property and nothing was listed.
Turned off restore, turned off file sharing, reset windows firewall and this thing was still there. Even allowed me to rename it so I got creative and named it a perfect 4 letter profane name.
Went as far as yanking all associated hardware and reinstalling hopefully to rid myself of this. As far I could tell nothing was doing much of anything so reconnected back to the net. I believe I was using IE6.
Thought I could trick it by updating to IE7 and it disappeared! Updated Firefox and started using it instead.
Days pass by and I needed IE to access a page that Firefox couldn't and noted slow response times(1 min to open yahoo). At the bottom of explorer status bar was lots of activity. All kinds of sites were listing. Like 2-3 a second. I don't know if this was attempted redirects, but that gateway icon was back in network places.
Knowing that NIS & AVG were weak I tryed several other scans with Avast and BitDefender which did not find anything. Spybot and AdAware only found MRU's which are minor. Ran the "crap" out of crap cleaner. Washed my windows clean with Window Washer. Even ran Windows Defender, which found Malis.A (spelt wrong for sure) But didn't give me any options to remove.
So here I am exposed asking for assistance. Now where do I start in tracking this down.
