The Consumer Electronics Show kicked off on January 8th this year, ushering in a broad swath of new technology, price drops, and product introductions. Amongst the hustle and bustle of CES '07, Intel announced the immediate availability of their Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, which represents the first "Mainstream" quad-core CPU ever produced. This introduction is significant in that Intel, having pioneered dual core computing for the desktop, is back for round two to pioneer quad core computing.

Back in late November, we at Short-Media ran an explanation of quad core which described the eventual benefits of a quad world. This move on Intel's part is a solid step towards realizing our predictions, as it will begin to steadily lower the price, thereby reducing the big barrier to entry. In turn this will also reduce the pricepoint at which AMD will be able to sell their quad core component this year. If that chip is competitive in any real fashion, Intel will have no choice but to compete on pricing, which is something they have the budget to do in the extreme.

We at Short-Media are very happy that the computing landscape is once again robust with innovation and leaps in computing power. We recall years like 2005 where little to no solid innovation was to be had, and product introductions were merely accelerations of their predecessors in the same product lines. It's good to see companies like Intel, who have stagnated in the past, kick the habit and come out swinging for our eventual benefit.

As always, we'll be keeping you up to date on any developments in the CPU or any other computing landscape. For now, we've got a couple great reviews, previews and inside looks at what the Q6600 means for computing. Check them out.
