Wii Impression

My roommate went out and was able to pick up a Wii at our local Target "15 in stock", He bought a handful of games and hooked it up to the big screen. I noticed that Nintendo is still shipping systems with the small recalled wrist strap... I played a few games of Tennis and Bowling along with Wii Golf. While I found the games fun for about 30 minutes, I found bowling and golf a bit generic for my taste and was board with the game play...

But Wii Tennis is by far the most active besides Wii boxing, as the little 1 armed Ninja's are freaking crazy in that game. "If you have played you will know what I am talking about" It is very hard not to get into the full motions of the actual sport being played, I found myself doing back hand and regular swings all over, I even got the smoking serve down!. My pregnant wife stood back as far as possible, "being 6'5 allows for a huge swinging radius"

Overall I like the feel of the controller, and can see why everyone marvels over it, but even with Zelda and Silent Steel I already missed the High Definition content I became accustom to with Xbox 360 and PS3. The Wii is by far the most active game system I have ever used, and I look forward to playing it a bit more when a few more exciting titles ship for the system. I give Nintendo a A+ for design and functionality and a B+ for over all excitement, I know it is just me but I just can’t live without that High Definition content… I blame my many years of high end PC gaming for that.

I've never liked consoles. I played the NES more than any other, but I also had SNES and PS1. I bought an Xbox (on S-M) and a bunch of games off ebay, but I found it extremely boring and sold it. I decided to try the Wii because it was only $250 and I was really interested in the control scheme. I thought it was about time someone did something innovative in the console area. For the record, I don't believe competing on the fastest processor, the most memory, or the best GPU is innovative. So far I only have Wii Sports and Zelda. I love both games and have a blast playing them with everyone. I've been nothing short of amazed by the Wii's intuitiveness and its ability to get everyone of all ages around the TV to play, including people who have never played a videogame in their life. I'm planning on getting Rayman Raving Rabbids and Super Money Ball: Banana Blitz. I hate watching sports on TV, I could care less about following them. However, I have a blast playing everything on Wii Sports. I think this is because Wii Sports is a very simple verison of each sport. If it was too in-depth, it wouldn't cater to such a large audience. I think Nintendo made an extremely smart move by bundling Wii Sports with the system in the US.

In summary, if you're reading this and are like me, you love PC gaming but Xbox/360 and PS2/3 don't interest you in the least bit, you should give the Wii a try. It definitely sets itself apart from other consoles. The graphics aren't on par with PC's or 360/PS3 but they don't suck either.

Btw Sledgehammer70, are you sure it's the original wrist-strap? According to Nintendo, consoles shipped starting in early December should have the newer version. I was unsure about mine so I ordered replacements from Nintendo. Sure enough when they arrived and I compared them, they were the same.

100% positive they are the originals...

But I do feel Nintendo could have done a bit better in the graphic dept. They could have easily raised the bar by spending an extra $10~20 on each unit, and I am sure the end user would not mind the extra cost for the better crisp graphics. To be honest Zelda feels very much like PS2 graphic wise, a bit more polygons than the Cube but nothing more. but liek I said the game play is fun and I am looking forward to a few upcoming games in the near future.

Yeah, I think there is no question the Wii is on par with PS2/XBox and slightly better than GameCube. I guess Nintendo just decided to focus almost exclusively on gameplay. I think it paid off though because they are hitting their target market (people of all ages, many of whom have never played videogames); this market doesn't mind that the graphics aren't state of the art. I agree though, if it only cost $10-20 more to include a better GPU, I wouldn't mind. But I'm definitely not disappointed with the graphics it has. I also think $250 is an important price point. It seems to fit just right for what the Wii offers. I wonder how much marketing research went into the pricing and how much of a debate there was internally at Nintendo for balancing the retail price vs. GPU specs.

Rayman is surprisingly good. My girlfriend never liked computer or console gaming and I bought a Wii partly in the hope she'd get into it. She loves Rayman Raving Rabbids.

We've been playing it every night this week unti 11:30-11:45pm (tired at work) and while I was at football training last night she completed it.

The word to sum the Wii up is FUN and that is what gaming should be about.

I bought a Wii and have it sitting next my Xbox 360. I really enjoy them both and am very happy I decided to wake up very early to get a Wii.

I would recommend one to anybody.

Hey Sledgehammer70 have you tried the Component cables? I know its no substitute for 1080i Xbox360 content, it may help with the clarity a bit.

I dont have a Wii yet (Cause I still cant find one) but will soon (hopefully). Dispite the 480p max res on that Wii, do the component cables at least improve sharpness and clarity?

They definitely improve the clarity of the picture. Obviously it's not XBox 360 or PS3 clarity, but it's a considerable improvement over composite.

Yes we are using component cables, but EDTV isn't all that great :) The thing is fun, but I am just HD spoiled :( but I haven't let that stop me from throwing my arm out playing baseball and tennis!

Had our first scare of a flying controller last night during a game of Wii Bowling... Dan My sister Boyfriend got the great idea he needed to let go of the controller just as if it was a ball... It was a good thing the wrist strap was fastened, or my ceiling would have need some repair.

my wii controller has been "launched" three times so far.

Once by my friend Mark, straight into a brick wall. The casing came off, i had to repair it using my handy work.

Second time was me, luckily it landed on my brothers big saddle bag, and was unscathed. :)

Third time was my brother, it landed on top of the hamster cage. never seen them jump up so high.

I'd definately recommend the Wii to anybody. I think tbh Tennis & baseball are my least favourite games.

I love the golf, being a golf player in real life, and i really like bowling and boxing.

But i still love it. It's awesome.

I find the normal wrist straps fine. The reason the wii-mote flew though was because those people, including me, weren't using the wrist strap. Forgot about it in the Eager-ness of playing bowling i guess.

Wow, Rayman Raving Rabbids is a blast! My favorite game is the music one where you use the Wii remote and nunchuck like drumsticks. I get a kick out of the rabbid's dance moves, hilarious! I also got Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, I haven't played it enough to form an opinion though.

Warioware: Smooth Moves just came out. I'll be picking that up after work. I'm going home to visit my family this weekend. They love the Wii. They should enjoy this game.

My girlfriend's favourite is Rayman ;) We were playing it last night and I got a blister on my finger from pumping the remote and nunchuck up and down on the second railway cart level. I also smacked my left hand with my right in my furiousness, and took the skin off my thumb. Great game though!

I'm sold. Just gotta save up enough money... On a similar but unrelated topic..... There's a description/link posted on the front page that is a must read. "ArsTechnica has a rather... blistering review of Far Cry: Vengeance on the Wii... read it for some laughs."

If you've played any previous versions of Warioware and enjoyed them, then you'll like Smooth Moves. It plays similarly to the other games, but uses the Wii remote. It has you in some funny positions, but it's great for laughs and a lot of fun. :)

the only bad thing about smooth moves as well as rayman is that you need to complete a portion of the single player to get multiplayer...kinda poopie huh?
i mean it would be quite embarassing to pull it out atr a party and then say "oh great oden's raven...I have to play for 3 hours before we can do anything here"

Does WarioWare: Smooth Moves get better? I bought it today and have been playing for awhile. I just finished that Cat and Dog but so far it hasn't been much fun, I like Rayman a lot but so far WarioWare just seems pointless with a bunch of simple tasks that take 1-2 seconds to complete. Am I missing something? Also, the long animations before/after the stages are annoying, is there any way to turn them off or bypass them?

Ya the Wii is an incredible system. I have never been a Nintendo fan, but the Wii is so much fun that I'm actually going to sell my magic cards to get one. I also agree, Tennis is so much fun, and amazingly psychical.

I like the Nintendo wii a lot, I think the tennis game is the funnest out of all of them and easiest, heh you don't even need to stand up to play that one just sit down and swing your wrist. I think zelda tp is very fun game to play with the fishing and sword fighting and horse back fighting. Red steel is ok but aiming can get hard. I love how you can surf the net on your tv screen also. I just can with for super smash brother brawl to come out for the online play !
