    :(

I'm not sure what anti-virus software, if any will run off a CD or floppy. At this point, I think you could try to eliminate hardware?

It's the same hardware that the PC has always had. It just crashed on day upon startup. Happened right after updating a Roxio program from their online website. Upon restart, the PC wouldnt boot. -max

I think I'm going to format the disk and start over. Do you know how to wipe a disk clean?

    Ah...so a program update did this. :(
Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration? I think that's what its called.

I did try last known good config, right after it happened. and it booted! but I wasnt smart enough to make corrective changes nor b/u the registry then. so I ended up losing that option the next time I rebooted. Bummer. Will read up on the XP tutorial. Ughhh!!! -max

Trogan - well, back to the laptop - the one we worked on cleaning up. on a whim, I ran the pandascan on it today. see the attached log. I can't believe it found a rootkit! Can this be true? I have only been to very reputable websites (like Yahoo news and sports, CNN, Microsoft, Hewlet Packaerd, etc etc) What the heck is going on? After all the cleaning work we have done to this laptop, it this report for real? -max

    Hi Max

That log shows no sign of a Rootkit. It found only Cookies and the Process.exe file which belongs to SDFix. You have nothing to worry about it. :)

Sweeeet! Hey - do you know of a utility program that can log how much your internet connection is up and down? Mine is down so much, have complained to my internet provider (cable modem) and they are very unresponsive. I want to protest my bill and seek some refund since the service is so unreliable - but would be best if I could also show them a log of how often the connection is dropped. any suggestions? -max

I don't know any software that can do this, sorry. Post in the General Software forum and see if others have suggestions for you.
