I've been looking into methods to build ultra-cheap folding hives from small system-on-chip microboards. Haven't found a way yet that would do better than a C2D or GPU though.

The goal is to get a few of these board with computing power collectively greater than a GPU at lesser cost and lesser power usage. It's hard!

Inte Core 2 Duo E4300 - Will be introduced at $163 this month and will be dropped to $133 by Q2. Anandtech got one to 3.38ghz on air, on an engineering board, with any regular DDR2-800. A smokin machine for $300-400 I bet.
