[resolved]Help-Think-adz

My daughters computer has think-adz (every web page has a ever changing banner ad across the top on it) and I can't get rid of it. Norton doesn't find it nor does lavasoft's ad aware. I can't get rid of it. Please help!!!

Hello Madczech and welcome to Short-Media! :)

I'll need to see some logs...

    1. Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    • Copy and paste the log here
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    2. I need to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Please post the HijackThis log and Uninstall list back here.

    Hi Madczech!

    Please do the following...

    1. I'd like to get some files analysed...
    • Go to VirusTotal
    • Copy and paste the following file path into the Search Box at the top of the page:
        C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB899587$\faterini.exe
      [*]Click on the Send button
[*]Save a copy of the results and post them in your next reply.
Do the same for this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ohafdvv. exe (try it with and without the space between the . exe)

      2. Download this file to your Desktop - combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

      Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

      3. Please post the following...

      1) Scan results
      2) ComboFix log
      3) New HijackThis log

Thank you for the logs. There are quite a lot of infected files which we will now remove.

      Please do the following...

      1. Make sure you can view hidden files and folders:
      • Click Start.
      • Open My Computer.
      • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
      • Select the View Tab.
      • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
      • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
      • Click Yes to confirm.
      • Click OK.
      2. Please download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

Next, copy everything in the Quote box below by pressing Ctrl+C
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpfz32.sys
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\mwinkoeb.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\njdsregn.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\invupdi.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\out.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\unwn.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\id.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\NNBBMA6_38.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\adsp.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\yzd.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\appupdate.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\aae1.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\icond.exe
      Next, open Killbox
Go to File tab and select Paste from Clipboard
Select the Delete on Reboot option
      Select All Files
Now click on the Red Circle with the White X
Press Yes to reboot your computer.

      3. Locate these files, one by one...

      C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB899587$\faterini.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ohafdvv. exe

...right-click and select Properties. Go to the Version tab (if available) and tell me what info is present, especially next to Company.

      4. Please post the information of those two files, along with a new HijackThis log.

umm, that didn't work. Killed my computer. I'm on another one. Here's what happened:
      I followed your directions for Killbox. When I got to the reboot part I clicked "yes" and it gave me a ten second count down, but instead of rebooting I got this message;
"PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process" And then nothing happened. So I manually rebooted it and now it won't conect to the internet, it can't find iexplore.exe and it keeps trying to install "Sonic Update Manager" and when I try to cancel the installation it keeps retrying (looking for a CD-Rom).I tried to Restore using yesterday's date, but it gives me the message that it can't restore to yestersdays date as there have been no changes to the computer!!

I need to ask some others about the "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process" error.

      I'll post back shortly.

Here's more info-you had me copy what looks like 13 files onto killbox, but it wiped out 108!
    • edited January 2007
And a bit more, although you may know this.
Killbot didn't delete any of the files, it looks like it just moved them all to C:\killbot is there any way to undo what killbot did or do I have to move all the files manually?

:wtf: I have never seen Killbox do that.

C:\!Killbox is the backup folder that Killbox creates. If you could list some of the files that are in there, that would be great but don't do anything to them for now.

EDIT: If you go to the Logs folder within C:\!Killbox and post the kb.txt, that would be easier,

Okay, here's a list. At closer inspection it's only 54 files, then that message I mentioned, then it copies the same 54 files. So the killbot file has two copies of each file. I'm on a different computer, so unfortunately I can't copy and paste:

      5 Files from C:\windows\system32
      smss.exe
      winlogon.exe
      services.exe
      lsass.exe
      svchost.exe
      4 files from C;\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin
      EvtEng.exe
      s24EvMon.exe
      WLKeeper.exe
      ZcfgSvc.exe

      C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

      3 from C:\Program Files\Symantec Shared
      ccSetMgr.exe
      SPBBCSvc.exe
      ccEvtMgr.exe

How many more should I send?

That's fine for now. How those files got deleted, worries me. Im still waiting to hear back and until then, we just need to be patient.

Okay, and thanks for the help.

also just noticed, the last file it removed was HiJackThis.exe

      Do the following...

You may want to the following instructions as the internet will not be available in Safe Mode.

      1. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
      • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
      • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
      • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
      • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
      • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
      • Login on your usual account.
      2. Once in Safe Mode, find and delete the following Files in RED.

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\mwinkoeb.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\njdsregn.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpfz32.sys
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\out.exe

      C:\WINDOWS\NNBBMA6_38.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\appupdate.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\invupdi.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\unwn.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\adsp.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\aae1.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\icond.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\yzd.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\id.exe

Let me know if you have trouble deleting any of the files.

      3. Reboot back into Normal Mode

      4. Download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from one of the following locations:

      http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip or
      http://www.besttechie.net/tools/Qoofix.zip
      1. Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
      2. Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
      3. Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
      4. If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.
      5. A log will be created...keep it safe as I'll need to see it soon.
      5. Download this file to your Desktop and run it.

      FindAWF

It will produce a log. Please save it and post that here in your next reply.

      6. Post the following...

      1) Qoofix log
      2) FindAWF log
      3) New HijackThis log

      Good job!

Before we go any further, I need you to do what I asked earlier.

      Locate this file...
      C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB899587$\faterini.exe
......right-click and select Properties. Go to the Version tab (if available) and tell me what info is present, especially next to Company.
    • edited January 2007
that file is not there. The only file in C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB899587$ is kerberos.dll and folder spuninst
    • edited January 2007
also I forgot to mention. When I tried to shut down the computer, nothing happened. I had to hold the power button to close it down.

Hi Madczech, good job. Just a little left to do.

      1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

      Updating Java:
      • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
      • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
      • Click the "Download" button to the right.
      • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
      • The page will refresh.
      • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
      • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
      • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
        • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
        • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
        • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
        • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
        • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
      • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
      • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
      2. Please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how things are.

Done, here's the latest HiJackThis report. And by the way, the computer is running 10 times better. Thank you.

Hi Madczech! Your HijackThis log is clean, good job. Let me know if we can close this thread.

You can delete Killbox and ComboFix as they are not needed anymore.

Here are some tips for a clean and scure computer.

      For XP users.
It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware. You can clean this by doing the following:

      • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
      • Close the Help and Support Center box.
      • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
      • Select (C: ) then click OK.
      • Click the More Options tab.
      • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click on the Security tab
      3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click on Default Level and click OK
      5. Click on the Custom Level button.
        • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

        • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        • Internet Explorer 7 users: Check all other items and make sure that they meet the (recommended) setting when applies.
        • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the
        settings, press the Yes button.
      6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Free programs that may help you in keeping the PC clean
      • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
        You can download SpywareBlaster here
A tutorial can be found here
      • SpywareGuard
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware. And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection.
        You can download SpywareGuard here
A tutorial can be found here
      • IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. It basically prevents any downloads, cookies, scripts from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
        You can download IE-SPYAD here
A tutorial can be found here
      • Hosts File
A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
A tutorial can be found here
        • MVPS Hosts File
You can download the MVPS Hosts File
Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
        • Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager
Essentially based on the research made by Webhelper, Andrew Clover and Eric L. Howes, it contains most if not all the known spyware sites...sites responsible for hijacks, rogue apllications etc...
          Download Bluetack's Hosts file here
          Download Bluetack's HostsManager here
Free Spyware Detection and Removal Programs
      • Ad-Aware
It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks.
        You can download Ad-Aware here
A tutorial can be found here
      • Spybot - Search & Destroy
It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
You can download Spybot - S&D here
A tutorial can be found here
Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware".
You will find the list here

      WinPatrol

      • Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
      • Detect & Neutralize ADware.
      • Detect & Neutralize Viral infections.
      • Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
      • Detect & Restore File Type Changes.
      • Automatically Filter Unwanted Cookies.
      • Avoid Start Page Hijacking.
      • Detect changes to HOSTS & critical system files.
      • Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!
      • Stop programs that repeatedly add themselves to your Startup List!
Starting with WinPatrol 9.5 PLUS users also get the addition of Real-time Infiltration Detection so they'll know immediately when changes are made to critical system areas. WinPatrol Free is not demo or trial software. You're welcome to use it as long as you like.

      Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
      http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

      Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

      Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.
