edited January 2007 in Science & Tech
Ok, I got DSL, works fine, got a wireless router so that I could put my laptop and desktop on the same network...installed the router, everything went smoothly, everything is connected correctly, laptop says it's connected to that network...but netiher computer will sign on the internet now. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

What type of DSL do you have? Does it require a login?

How did you configure the WAN side of the router?

    Which router is it?

Hmm, good questions! I have BellSouth DSL? Is that what you mean? But I usually sign on using AOL broadband and it requires user ID & password. This is where I figure I'm messing up.

The router is - Linksys Wireless - G

Is that the info you need? Thanks

    Yes, some of it.

What I meant was...when you were using just the modem attached to your PC, you probably ran a CD that came with the Install package and you had to pick an email address and password, is that correct?

If so, did you have to use that name and password when you wanted to connect to the net, before you signed into AOL, or did you just click the AOL Icon and sign in?

Ok - the DSL modem from BellSouth came with an email and password they picked, but it does have one.

Once I installed the DSL modem, I can get on the internet by just clicking on internet explorer. No sign-in required. To get on AOL I have to use the same old password and username from my dial-up service. There is no other sign-in required.

I've tried using the password and usernames for both services, but neither would work...but like I said, I technically don't have to sign on to anything to get online...it's just if I want to get on AOL and that's where I think I may be messing up. I'm not sure which option to pick.

I've also tried connecting via explorere and AOL and neither work. Thanks

georgiagirl47. You have started two threads that essentially address the same issue. This is called "double-posting". This makes it very difficult for those trying to assist you. The history w/in the thread is an important tool we use to ascertain what has and has not been covered so far. Please, stay w/ one thread until the issue has been resolved. Thankyou! :)

    This is the first thread:

yes - I didn't mean to do that but when I posted on the old one, I was afraid no one would look at it because it was older (that is normally what happens at most tech sites) so I will quit posting on this one, because I think I'm getting somewhere with this one. Sorry about that!

Stay w/ the original thread, please. You will only succeed in frustrating those who might otherwise help you by jumping around. I know what you mean by old threads but it doesn't work that way here. (I was pleasantly surprised to learn this when I first came here, too.) Those of us who choose to stay "subscribed" to a thread are notified via email whenever there is a new post to the thread - regardless of when it was originally started or how old it is. When I first came here I replied to a thread that was two years old and people responded! So, believe me, you'll get help, I promise!

I was just afraid I would not get help on the old one - and now I see that I am, so once again sorry...
