can't see backgrounds in IE

I know there must be a simple fix, but I can't find it. In any browser window (IE 6?) I have no background colors visible. Someone switched something since my laptop screen was dark, but we since found the brightness adjustment : ) I have looked in the internet options and control pannel but have not found the magic button. A little guidance would be most appreciated.
