Reformat HD

edited January 2007 in Hardware
I have IBM T-60 model laptop.

I tried to reformat it with win XP PRO but it said "unable to detect any Hard Drive".

The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive but I do have a USB floppy drive that could plug in.

Please help and thank you in advance!

Hi khoiey. Welcome to Short Media!
Do you know how to access your computer's BIOS? If you do, please, check there to see if the HDD is being detected by the system.

What was your reason for installing XPPRO?
IOW, was there a problem that precipitated your decision to do this?

My corporate went out of business and I get to keep the laptop. I have Win XP Pro CD.

Once I'm in the BIOS, how do I check the HDD?

Just check to see if it's actually being detected by the BIOS. Nearly every computer's BIOS is different so I can't direct you exactly how to get there.

Look around for information re: CD DRIVES, HARD DRIVES, ETC.

See if, for hard drive, there is one actually listed there (it should show the model number of the drive)

    1. HERE is a manual that will help you w/ entering and navigating your BIOS. You will need Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view the file.
    2. The User Manual mentioned above was found HERE at Lenova's User's Guides & Manuals page for the T60 family of laptops.
    3. For more specific support from Lenova on your particular laptop, go HERE and select the BRAND (Notebooks and Handhelds), FAMILY (Thinkpad T60), TYPE, MODEL and OPERATING SYSTEM. (You will need to look on the bottom of the laptop in order to find the TYPE & MODEL number.) Then click CONTINUE.
    4. You can get general information about the T60 series of IBM Thinkpads by leaving TYPE set to ALL TYPES, choose your operating system, then click CONTINUE.

Ok. Now we know that your computer is recognizing the HDD. Now to move on to the next step.

As long as your computer is booting off of the CDROM drive and into the Windows XP installation user interface, I don't see any need for a floppy disk drive.

EXACTLY, how far into the Windows XP installation process did you get?
What is the EXACT message you are seeing displayed re: the HDD?

 !! Sorry 'bout that, khoiey. Wasn't thinking. You're right. You're gonna need a FDD along w/ the mobo SATA drivers (on floppy). Unless of course you know how to slipstream.

If you want to go w/ slipstreaming a new OS install CD, I recommend you start a new thread w/ "How to slipstream XP Pro SATA drivers" in the title.

What's FDD and mobo drivers? and what's slip stream?

I have external USB floppy drive. Would that work on this case?

My apologies, khoiey. Sorry to through all those acronyms and foreign term at you.

FDD=Floppy disk drive & MoBo=motherboard (or mainboard). You can find the definitioning of slipstreaming in this context HERE.

It depends on your BIOS. Since it's a newer system, it should work.

Here's a link that might be helpful.

    Hi khoiey,

    http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62909.html

This is the link where you'll find the drivers you have to place on the USB floppy if your laptop can detect it in the BIOS.

You also need to remember that when the Windows setup begins from the CD, you will have to press F6 when the relevant prompt to install RAID or SCSI drivers appears, and then locate the driver on your USB floppy.

The rest of the Windows XP installation should then complete successfully once the driver for your hard disk has been provided.

    1. You don't need to know which motherboard you have.
    2. You DO need to know the Lenova machine TYPE and MODEL of the laptop.
    3. Please, refer back to post #5, step 3.
    4. Follow the LINK that nonstop301 gave you and download to your desktop the file named B]Z9im06ww.exe[/B
    5. This file is meant to be installed while in Windows.
    6. In order to use it to install your SATA drivers b4 installing Windows XP, you will need to "extract" (decompress, unzip) the file.
    7. To extract the file, you will need a utility like WinRAR.
    8. If you don't have an "archive utility (file compression utility)" already that can do this (perform the task in step 12), download and install WinRAR.
    9. After you've downloaded the SATA drivers,...
    10. Place a clean formatted floppy diskette in the floppy drive.
    11. Right-click on the file named Z9im06ww.exe
    12. Choose EXTRACT TO Z9IM06WW
    13. Now, double-click the folder named Z9IM06WW
    14. Click on EDIT
    15. Click on SELECT ALL
    16. Right-click anywhere inside the highlighted area
    17. Choose SEND TO 3 1/2 Floppy ( A: )
    18. The contents will be copied to the floppy diskette.
    19. Follow the instructions nonstop301 gave you in post # 15.
    20. For more help on how to install drivers b4 proceeding w/ a Windows XP installation, refer back to the LINK given you in post # 13
    21. You can find detailed instructions re: how to perform a "clean" install of Windows XP HERE.

Do you have one layin' around you can reformat and use?

The good news is they're dirt cheap now. You can have a big box of 'em for a song anymore.
