iMac shennanigans

Lo guys, hope someone can offer some advice when it comes to the wonderful world of macs. I recently came into possession of a first generation iMac. Now, I understand that I can upgrade this to OSX. I've slapped some more RAM in there, and now I'm ready for the upgrade. However, to do that I need to install firmware update 1.2 on the box. Unfortunately, the internet connection doesn't work (the mac helpfully informs me I need to reinstall from the system dis, which I don't have). So... I tried downloading the firmware update on a PC and copying it onto a memory stick then copying it onto the Mac. No joy (in hindsight, that one was never going to work). So, anyone got any ideas about how I can get the firmware update onto the Mac?

Is OS 9 installed? If so, what is the specific error message you get and is there an error code?

if os 9 is installed and working, i'd try my best to figure out why the internet connection doesnt work. why doesn't it work? is the install disk required for some networking module or program or something? if so we might be agble to find you an alternative.

i'll ask around today to see if someone might have a system install disk, if i find one i might be able to mail it to you. gimme some specifics, what model and what OS version are we talking about?

Cheers for the reply, managed to sort it out. I found a copy of the OS 9.0 disk, which had internet explorer on it. Installed that, which sorted my internet out. Downloaded and installed the 9.1, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates and am now ready to take the plunge with OSX (10.3 is the latest version that will run on my iMac I think). I also need a keyboard, since I don't have one :( (lucky that IE installed with Apple.com set as a favourite or I'd have had fun trying to get updates)

It was fairly straightforward really. I had some complications in that the proxy tick was on in the internet settings, and I didn't have a keyboard. Which was fun. Other than that, it was fairly straightforward. You might need a firmware update (check Here) and if you do you need to be on OS 9.1 or above to run the firmware update before installing OS X. You also need 128MB or above in the iMac (I have 128MB and running more than one application makes it chug a bit).
