Hi. I had a new MOBO and PS installed in my 3 yr old emachine T2895. It came with 3 set Restore CDs. It never came with nor did I create a original Setup CD, which I keep reading about, unless they are talking about the 3 restore cd's. I tried loading the 3 cd's. It appears to load fine, then has me reboot. it displays a page or so of files being loaded and then always stops when it gets to \Windows\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys, then does it again.
I get prompts to select Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, .. with Command Prompt, and Start Windows Normally. I have tried all of them.
None work. The replacement motherboard is not identical to the original.
I am assuming the problem has to do with drivers not being the same with the new MOBO, but I don't know. If I select "Last Known Good Config", it says I can attempt to repair this file by using the orig setup cd-rom - select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. - How can I do this when I don't have any cd's other than the 3 restore? BTW, I have loaded linux after giving up on this, and did have it working so-so - it boots, was able to use internet, but had issues with music videos and some other stuff. Decided I would try this one more time. Ideally I would get XP working, and have a couple of linux OS's also on this pc. Anyone got any idea how to get XP working, short of buying another copy? Thanks for your help.
Wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or use the 12 page one. I tried to reply to the existing thread, but it didn't allow it..

I’m a little lost on this one vbdanl.
    1. You say you “had” a mobo and PS replaced…does that mean someone else did it? And if so, did they give you back a computer that doesn’t boot up?
    2. Was the Hard drive original? Did you have the mup.sys problem when you tried to boot up off the original hard drive? Is that why you tried to use the recovery disks?
    3. So when you say “recovery disks”, does that mean you have completely reinstalled Windows on this machine and when you boot up you get mup.sys?
    4. I also can’t tell if you’ve completely wiped out that hard drive but if you haven’t, you might want to check out this site that tells you how to pull the install files off your hard drive from the i386 folder. http://www.easydesksoftware.com/recovery.htm#XP
    5. Given the fact that you have a new mobo (and more importantly a new BIOS) you also might pull absolutely all non-essential hardware out of the box and see if you can boot up that way. All PCI cards, USB hubs, wireless keyboard/mouse things, everything. Just mobo, hard drive and video. If that boots up, work your way up from there.
