I'll need more than six capital letters in this reply from you, but:

What OS & SKU are you running (XP Pro?)

When you go into the properties (right click on the .LNK and go to properties) what does the link point to? Use a nice simple shortcut to some semi-standard application so that we can figure out where it should be point to.

Mac, have you reinstalled Windows lately, repartitioned your drive, restored an image, or added a new HD? What I'm after here is the possibility that something has shifted your drive letters. That would be the first thing I'd look for if all your shortcuts stopped working.

Bottom line, have all of the programs always resided on your G: drive?

He means delete it. My WMP link looks exactly like yours except that it's all on the C: drive, and the "Start In" box is empty.

i did make some image drives using some dvd burning software that ive since deleted some vso bull**** programs that worked slightly but took way too much effort.and that did change my drive letters around,(i think i remember it only being my cd/dvd/image drive letters) but also my windows has always been on G, its my faster drive with 10,000 rpm. Could this be my problem?

are you sure it just doesnt have a Start in box? cuz the shortcut that wmp installs on your desktop when wmp is installed/updated is a bit different then a normal made shortcut ..anyway deleting the Start in: "G:\Program Files\Windows Media Player" doesnt do anything..still ****ed

Have all the programs you're having trouble with also been on the same drive letter all along?

hey all big update here: i was browsing this posts here and i just happened to run into an awesome artical wrote here and by sheer luck in the middle of it i see this:
"Re: Repairing Windows XP in 8 Commands - SM GuideThanks again, Thrax, for the great guide. It helped me once and certainly saved me a great deal of time. Now, I'm facing something very strange to say the least. The problem began with Adware Ad-Watch running on my system not connected to the internet and suddenly the program told me that something is trying to alter a protected value in the registry. When it asked me for my action I denied the change, and then same thing occurred over and over in the same session the program kept telling me that different registry values are being altered. I kept cancelling the change and then just punched a reboot button on the computer. The Windows reloaded but much to my bewilderment most icons on the desktop as well as all quick launch icons instead of their usual individual signs had the same kind of system icon and Windows cannot recognize how to open any of the programs that usually load at start up, so I have to do it manually i.e. “open with”. Neither could windows recognize how to open any of the system tools programs in start menu. So finally I opened system restore manually and much to my surprise discovered that “no restore points are available”! I have System Mechanic 6 installed which didn’t help either when I tried to restore the registry. So I finally decided to attempt Thrax’s 8 step recovery and though certain that I enter things correctly (since I’ve done it once before), in the first step of ATTRIB –H C:BOOT.INI it tells me that C:BOOT.INI is not found!

So I’m at a loss. If anybody could help figure out what to do, I’d greatly appreciate it. I haven’t lost any data, but sure you know it’s a hustle to have to completely reinstall the system.

    Thanks"

now i completely second that whole last comment if anyone can help me it would be most kind. i didnt think that my ad-aware had something to do about this problem but that is exactly what happened to me! its not a virus/malware etc. i PMed him -vadlectro- about this but i couldnt email him and idk if he even still visits here, trying to seeing if hes found a solution and ill post it here in case anyone runs accross this or has googled their way here

 SUCCESS!!! My thanks go to everyone who put input forward, even though the solution wasnt found here. It's from chance that i stumbled on that guy's off-topic reply in another post here that ive found more info on my problem (ad-aware is too old and a F*ck up or its a very specific malware to F*ck up ad-aware) and ive found a solution...

    Here:

    Hi

It looks like Ad-watch has remembered a certain registry setting and is returning to these settings after you have corrected them. Two steps we have to do:

    1) Correct the registry values
    2) Learn ad-watch to accept these new settings.

To download the correct defualt Registry Values:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

    Reccomended these 3:
LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix (Restores Default Shortcut Behavior)
EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files)
REG File Association Fix (Restore default associations for REG files)

    What worked for me:
    Downloading the 3 above.
    Unzipping.
    Selecting "Open With..."
    Then "Registry Editer Utility"
    Clicking "Yes"
    Restarting comp and vuahlah!!!!!

    now as for the:

As anyone with this issue will know well, the suggested method did not work for me and i will be trying "Repairing Windows XP in 8 Commands" - by Thrax on this forum. or maybe just installing Vista  Always something!!

I've always had good results with repair installs from media. I think I'm the only one to have it normally work well though...

Sorry for the lack of clarity on an earlier reply, I wanted to try to diagnose something, but my workdays have sucked for a while recently. :)
