We're going to need a little more background information.

What happened when the problem started?

What have you done so far to try and fix it?

I had an old comp taht died...i put it in a machine that was covered up w/ viruses/worms/trojans. (pulled the old drive out). when booting I got to the safe mode screen. then gave me the error. I attempted chkdsk /p. now it booted w/ tha disk in the drive now asking for the code. is it formatting and reinstalling??

I have been studying this thread, and I can't try any of the fixes, as I can't restart in safe mode with command promp, or any mode for that matter. Any ideas? If I press any key, I end up back at the original error message. I tried recovery from my CD, to no avail.

when installing "from my disk" xp home 2002 serv. pack1 I get an error stating that accessor.inf is unavail. it gives me the option to try again or skip. what do I do? I have tried oh.....20 times. I even went and bought a disk cleaner thinking it was a dirty disk. Help!!!

Let's keep all your problems together in a single thread.

    No problem. :)

Errors like that during a clean install are generally due to either a faulty disc or faulty hardware. If you are sure the cdrom drive and disc are OK, I'd think it may possibly be a memory problem. There's a lot of data being shuffled around while Windows copies things to the drive to run Setup. Bad RAM could cause the problem you describe.

Run a pass or two of Memtest-86 to check it out. If it passes, we'll go from there.

If it gives you an option to retry copying the file you can give it a shot. I've seen cases where after several attempts it will finally decide to go ahead and do it. If that fails, it would also be worth hitting "skip file" if that is an option. If neither of those work, you don't really have much choice but to abort the installation, do you? :(

Unzip the files and double-click on Install.bat. It will ask you the drive letter of your floppy drive and proceed to make a bootable disk for you. Boot from the floppy and the test will start automatically.

If you don't have a floppy drive, let me know and I'll point you toward a version you can burn to CD. :)

thanks i'll skip it. yep I retried 30 times to no avail. thnx for your help!!! worms/viruses/trojans cant effect memory can it? b/c I went from 512mb ram to 64 before I started this endevor.

alright is it a mem prob? I skipped it and as soon as I did acelpdec couldnt either...skipped(esc)....acerscan.inf same prob....skipped.....then another... then everything is giving me the error skipping moves to the next. I think I ruined this install but what could have caused this? can I shut down and try again or will this "lock" me out like it(windows installer) said it would if I did not complete install.

    Re-read Post #11.

Your memory comes into play since it acts as the middle-man in the process. You are having trouble copying files from the CD to the hard drive. It is likely due to one or more of the following:

    1) A bad CD
    2) A bad CD drive or other hardware causing the drive not to be able to copy the files from the CD to the hard drive.
    3) Rotten screwed-up no-good RAM garbling the files while they are being copied.
    4) A bad hard drive. The rest of the file copying process goes fine, but when it comes time to write the files to the drive it can't do it.

Let's get the RAM issue settled before we move on to other possible causes.

By the way, is this a sure 'nuff Microsoft shiny hologram-labeled disc you are using?
