One of my sons has pre-ordered S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for me. The game is set in the exclusion zone around Chernobyl in 2012. You have to survive in a huge 30 sq Km world against the wildlife, other stalkers and the russian army. After reading a preview of the game it seems to play a little like Oblivion. It is free roaming and you choose whether to accept missions or not. From the vids I've seen it is a very detailed world and the list of game features is impressive, too many to mention here. I think this game is going to be a 'biggie'.
More info here - http://www.stalker-game.com/en/?page=overview
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is set to be released on March 23rd.
Oh, and it has multiplayer.

Yeah been waiting on this one for years now... thought it was vapor ware until a couple days ago when they started talking about it again. Doesn't feel as appealing as it did a few years ago though. Still interesting.

I know. I read it was supposed to have been one of the first games to use Direct x 9! They have spent years making it, which must be a good sign eh?

I hope. But all the great stuff it had going for it has been done in HL2 + other games if you ask me.

Been waiting for this game for years, I remember downloading the alpha that got leaked and was impressed by what they had done then.

I think this will have more depth than half life if they've managed to pull off half of what they've been talking about over the years.

PC Gamer had a preview of it a couple of issues ago. They said the game play was very good, but the graphics are somewhat dated due to the very long production time. But is should be able to run on most peoples hardware pretty well.

    I'm looking forward to it.

I read the graphics are on par with HL2, that'll do for me. :)

Playing Stalker now. It's ok, but not worth the long wait. It runs good on half of the PC's out there and laggy as hell on others. One guy in a forum I was reading had a gforce 8800, core duo, and 1 gig of ram and the game ran real slow. I think it is a game that will need lots of optimizing before it is playable on most systems. There is another new game called Inferno that runs very well on all systems. This is a new release from Poland and runs super smooth maxed on my setup..With all the hype, Stalker, to me, is a big let down, like The Matrix was. It seems like the games that are hyped are not so good and the ones that come from nowhere, like Infernal, are great.

The game gets released today in the US and tomorrow in Europe. I wonder how many of the people having problems are playing ripped off versions.

Please do not ASSUME that my version is ripped off Sir. I assure you that it was paid for in full. Keep your assumptions to yourself.

I never said you had ripped off the game but I do have to wonder about the people who have been reporting these problems over the last week or two.

If that upsets you then so be it.

[edit]Sorry dude that was totally prickish, I wasnt saying you pirated the game but a lot of people have and deserve all they get. Hows it running for you and on what sort of hardware?[/edit]

Well it's supposed to be released here today. If Amazon do their usual thing it'll be here this morning. Then we'll see.

I've seen the ripped off version on one of our customers machines, sorry to say I wasn't really impressed. It was set at 1024x768 and ran 40+ fps (fraps) but was very stuttery and jerky. Possibly the cause of the unprotect, I don't know... Will have to rent it and check it out before I'd buy it...

So many tried and true FPS engines out there that work, I don't know why people think they have to create their own. Royalties I guess...

I didn't see anything near HL2 quality graphics IMHO. your mileage may vary though. :)

I got, installed and played Stalker today and it was running quite jerkily at the (detected) default settings. I tried changing some settings and got it to where it could be played but it wasn't anything like as smooth, or detailed, as I'd like. Then our very own Mr Shorty popped round and tried a few things. He found an updated config file which makes a huge differance to performance. After installing, it turned the resolution right up as well as several other graphics settings and it runs very smoothly. It is a very good game and well worth the wait. Anybody having any problems with it I would recommend getting this 'fix'.
Thanks to rains of destruction for posting it and many thanks to Dan for finding it and giving up his time to help me out. Once again Dan, I owe you one. :respect::thumbsup::rockon: :type:

Stalker is excellent. My only 'complaint' is it desperately needs a quick save/quick load. Whenever you are killed you have to return to the main menu and load a saved game. To save in game you also have to exit to the main menu.

Excellent, thanks Jaketh. It's not mentioned in the manual and I did press along the F buttons, it works now though. Much better. :)

OK, the character animations are very 2003, the textures can look a little rough, but the plot and environment are so utterly immersive. YOU ARE wandering around a nuclear wasteland. I thought since Bothered thought so much about the game Thief, that he and I were on the same wavelength about what constitutes satisfying gaming, and I was right. I love this game. You pick and choose your fights. You don't have to run around blasting everything in sight, but you can if you want. But you run the risk of running out of ammo. I tried that at the beginning, using my DM skills to advance, but I ran out of bullets. Not so much pistol and shotgun rounds, there's plenty of those lying about, but rifle rounds for the HK and AK are few and far between. And it's hard to trade for them because in the beginning levels, noone carries rifle rounds. The artifacts on the belt are a bit difficult to figure out. I tried them a couple times but kept dying of radiation poisoning LOL So I happened upon a combination of Endurance artifacts (I forget the exact name of them) that enable me to run pretty much forever. I'm at the level now where I'm in the Duty faction zone and I've met the bar man. I tried the arena and did quite well but I couldn't advance after the soldiers wearing all that freakin armor. Head shots don't faze them. Anyways, this is a very enjoyable game, this is what HL2 should have, could have been.

    Update.
I recently had to format C and lost my save games. I had been playing for weeks and weeks. I wish games would save to their own folder on the drive the game lives. Anyway, if you're playing Stalker back up your saves, just in case. They are in C\documents and settings\all users\shared documents\Stalker-shock
Glad to say I'm enjoying it the second time around but it'll be nice to catch up to where I was, I've gone a different route this time which helps.

I hate to revive a forgotten post...

Has anyone 'beaten' the game. I've found there ARE multiple endings. I currently have three or four...

A note: once you 'finish' the game that's it...you can't continue playing for a '100% completion' or tie up any loose ends. I kinda wish I could. I had built up a decent character, and was let down when I couldn't continue playing.

I'm currently helping the scientist, where you go to the mobile lab. I was well past here last time. I got the suit and think I was going back to the bar when I lost my saves. How much more is there if I stick to the story? Lots I hope.

Just started playing this game and it's quite enjoyable. I do wish that you could build up your character RPG style but as it is it's a good solid blend of an FPS with RPG elements. The graphics aren't breathtaking, but the environments are huge, the AI is excellent and everything else about the game is solid.

They're making a prequel now, like a lot of adventurous independent developers this game really couldn't deliver on the hype. Reminds me of Operation Flashpoint (could have been the greatest game ever) in many ways.

    More Stalker? brilliant.
I haven't seen a game yet that DOES live up to the hype, or a movie, or anything else really. I do love it though, best game since HL2, IMHO.
