Noob Networking...

edited February 2007 in Science & Tech
HI everyone!

I am trying to network my folding rigs and I really have no idea where to start. I have a wireless notebook, a Belkin G router, and four PCs that will be hard lined to that router. I would like to be able to access the four hardlined PCs with the notebook via the router. Is this possible? How should I set this up. Please help!

Power, if all runs right, the Belkin should hand out IP addresses in the same subnet so that everything can talk to each other. Wireless too, makes no difference. They all get their IP addresses from the Belkin so that shouldn't be an issue.

When you say you want to access the four PC's from the laptop....you mean you want to be able to go into the PC's and share files? If they are XP, run the Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel. If the wizard talks about Internet Connection Sharing back up...you've gone the wrong way. YOu have a router...I think they call it a residential gateway in the wizard. That should set you up.

Now I hope to H--l you don't have Norton Internet Security or all bets are off.

No Norton here. I will try that, I went through the wizard but when I save the settings to a jump drive, it tells me to plug it into a wireless access point. All that I have that could do that is the Belkin, and it does not have a USB port. Am I just making this too complicated? I'm sure as I go through this I will post back with more questions. Thanks for your assistance!

Well...........I believe you ran the wrong wizard. The Network Setup Wizard doesn't ask you to carry a USB drive to the other computers. The Wireless Setup Wizard does. The only wireless connection you need is between one computer and the Belkin...right? So run the wireless wizard again, but this time when you get to the window that gives you the option of using a USB drive or manual, choose manual. Then just write down the encryption key, and you'll have to take that key and plug that into the Belkin manually. Consult the Belkin documentation to show you how to do that. You're best bet is to just use one of the wired computers to get into the Belkin. I won't explain why, its just easier.

The Network Setup Wizard I was talking about just sets up each computer so that the Windows firewall and some other settings are configured for file and print sharing. But you need to get all computers working through the Belkin first.
