Advice on Wireless Network II
Im having trouble logging on to 198.162.1.1 in order to change router access password in the setup. The instructions say leave the user field blank and use the default password 'admin' to log onto the web based setup utility.
Any clues?

Welcome to Short-Media. I see you're new but you should know that its kind of frowned on to jump into someone else's thread so I moved your post over here.
I don't know if your IP address is a typo but that could be the problem. You wrote 198.162.x.x.......it should be 192.168.x.x. Try that. If that doesn't get you in come back we'll get it figured out.
Thanks Guru...checking now.

I few things. For you to get to 192.168.1.1, your IP must be in the same subnet. That means you have to have 192.168.1.x. So.............in XP (I assume?) go to Start> Run..., then in that Run box type "cmd" (no quotation marks), then hit Enter. You should get a command prompt window. Then just type "ipconfig", then Enter. What is your IP address and the address of your gateway?
user = blank,
and password = admin
If that's not working, you'll have to reset the router. The user name will then be as described above.
Here's what the black screen said...

Every now and then I read a Linksys document that makes it sound like the default user name and default password are both "admin". I've done a lot of 'em and have never seen that. My experience, and most Linksys docs, tell you user is blank and passwd is admin. Try both just in case, but if you get an authentication screen and still can't log in after a reset, something's wrong with that router.
When I do the reset on the router and all returns to default setings, am I gonna have to do anything special to get back on w/ the laptop? Run the install wizard again from the laptop?
Thanks, Paul
