Explorer.exe loads, then closes...

Got a very strange computer here. It's free of viruses and spyware, I've completely emptied the startup tasks, disabled system.ini/win.ini, run dial-a-fix, replaced explorer.exe and shdocvw.dll, scanned for rootkits, disabled all the shell extensions for explorer, run most of the HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt-level registry fixes if applicable, but the problem persists:

On login, explorer.exe loads for a second, then immediately closes.

Thoughts?

Thrax if it wasn't you my first guess would have been spyware. That's the only time I've seen that. I'll be interested to see what happens but if there's no spyware I've got noth'n. If you start explorer.exe again does it close right away?

    Indeed it does.

Have you completely ruled out hardware failure?

Or 3rd party explorer enhancements such as windowblinds, et. al?

Stripped the add/remove programs of any non-windows application, hardware checked out okay (HDD and memory especially).

Thrax, did you ever resolve the issue? I'm having the same problem and am looking for a solution.
    Thanks,

jbz....Thrax's first comment was that the computer he was working on was free of viruses, etc. That's because that problem is often a symtom of virsis/crud. If you are absolutely sure, we should start a new thread instead of hijacking this one. If you aren't sure, you should go over to our SVT removal thread here and post a HJT log.
