SYSTEM File Corrupted, No Way to Repair

edited February 2007 in Hardware
Like others here, I've gotten the following message, which probably has something to do with my trying to uninstall IExporer 7:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: c:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original Setup CD-rom.

I've booted from my Startup disk, but because my drive is a SATA 2, the system doesn't see it. So thus there's no way I can repair it.

Is there a System file backup, and is it likely to solve my problem? I tried a Fix It! emergency disk, but that hasn't helped. (Those emergency software suites are mostly useless if one can't boot.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

after booting to your xp cd, you need to press F6 then install sata drivers like you would during a clean install.
