Graphical Client as service?

I started to install the graphical client on my new home system, and wanted to use FireDaemon to turn it into a service. My wife and son and I all use the computer, so it is usually onthe XP login screen when not in use. I want to make sure it will fold no matter which user, or none, is on the system.

I read the instructions on the FireDaemon setup, and it mentions using the console-only client. I want to use the graphical client...I like it, and also I promised my wife she would be able to "turn it off" if she was doing something intensive in her design programs (although I will show her the benchmark tests showing no performance interference on many programs;) )

So my question: can I use the FireDaemon to run the Graphical client as a service?

Cheers,

Dexter...

I have never tried but I always use the console whe setting it up with Firedaemon.

Why use the GUI if its going to be serviced?

Well, I have not used the console client, so am just not used to it. I like to be able to cal it up and see those molecules fold on screen :fold::fold::fold:

I also like having the tray icon. Does the console version have that as well? Some way to quickly see your progress and pause folding if need be?

dex - unfortunately you cannot run the graphical as a service.

The console has no gui functions whatsoever. It runs in a command line window.

There is a program I have seen called tray it. It will take the console and move it to the system tray from the taskbar.

You can always maximize the console to see where you are.

I know some people put a shortcut to the FAHlog file on their desktop for easy access.

Em3 is a good tool to monitor more than one machine/client to see where its all at as well. You can even hide FAH with that and monitor it at the same time.

Damn. Thanks Prime. But why can't the graphical be run as a service? What is the technical reason for that?

There has to be a better way to do this? I am not asking for much.....well, ok, I am. I want to run as a service, but still have the tray icon and the graphical feedback when I want it. Greedy me

What about the Electron Microscope program to monitor the folding progress graphically? Anyone use or know how that works? Then I can install the console as a service, and use EM to view the crunching if I wish.....

Yes EM3 works very well. I am using that for my console (non-serviced) my serviced console, and another computers console.

Ok, I am thinking that I did this wrong....

I installed F@H console...then made it a service with FireDaemon. Service works great, folding away.

Then I installed EM and tried to view my folding. Nothing.

Do I have to use EM to install the console as a service?

What options do I set here to install as a service, and make sure it runs before login, and after logouts?

If you are starting the console as a service, you need to uncheck the "Lauch F@H on startup, it might try starting the console twice, which will FUBAR the wu.

When you press the Microscope icon you have to enter CPU Info, Box path, and Box name on this screen.

Thanks Guys, I'll try that tonight. Meantime, my new home system is folding quite nicely as a service :)

Thanks mmonnin and muddocktor, that solved the problem. Running as a service now, but I can monitor it when I want to. Now if only my stats would update so I can see how the new box is adding to my points....

Yeah the stats on EM3 pull from a slow server or something.

    Anytime Dexter.
