The AMD 690 series chipset was released today, marking the first time the company has released a graphics chipset without the ATI brand attached. It uses ATI Radeon X1250 graphics in its design.

The new chipset is expected to boost AMD's sales against Nvidia's GeForce 6100 and 6150 chipsets.

According to AMD, the 690 is "one of the first chipsets with motherboard graphics to receive the Certified for Windows Vista logo." Microsoft and AMD partnered to develop the chipset for compatibility with Vista.

The announcement comes after the release was originally postponed from February 8th, when, reportedly, motherboard makers began to worry the release would slip to March. The new chipset will be licensed to a slew of companies including ASUS, Biostar, EPoX, Gigabyte, MSI, and Sapphire.
