Initially a Zlob infection, now, "who knows"!? - Wilburg
Dear all,
I run Windows XP on a home laptop and use AVG Free as my anti-virus. A few days back it came up with multiple warnings indicating the presence of the Downloader.Zlob.FC Trojan in random *.dll files in my system 32 folder.
I kept "healing" these files and nothing seemed to happen, bar that these files kept reappearing and being healed over and over. I turned off my laptop (as I had to travel) and when I turned it on it seems all hell had let loose. AVG was still finding files, but now pop-ups turn up at every corner, my IE browser is sometimes hijacked with the page I was searching for is not the page I end up with etc. On a few occasions other Trojan's have been found, however i'm afraid I cannot remember the names of them *sorry*.
I regard myself as having a low-level of computer knowledge and so (most probably rather foolishly) had a go at removing the infection, trying to follow the different processes highlighted in similar threads on this site.
To date I have run VundoFix. On every run it finds new files. I have also run multiple HJT scans and 'fixed' infected O2 and O20 entries. I've even renamed HJT to "Scanner.exe" and this revealed a few more O2 and O20 entries. I have also run AVG Anti-Spyware and that picked up around 90 issues (including the tracker cookies).
Whilst AVG has not found another *.dll for a day since running AVG Anti-Spyware, HJT still finds infected entries and indeed VundoFix still finds malicious files. Pop-ups are still present.
I would really appreciate any help anybody can give me. I look forward to any replies, and thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
Wilburg

Download HijackThis (if you don't have yet).
Save it to your desktop and then double-click to run it.
It will install the program in C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Browse to that location with windows explorer, and double click on the HijackThis.exe program to run.
Choose the Do a system scan and save a logfileThat will allow you to save the log to the desktop (or some other place) and leave open a notepad file with the HijackThis log in it
Post your HijackThis log into this topic.
Thank you for such a quick reply. Please find below a HJT logfile I have just scanned:

I've just read the "Read this before you post your HJT log" sticky thread and have not followed any of that procedure. I shall follow that procedure and re-post up a fresh HJT log.
Apologies for that.
Wilburg
I look forward to any advice and help. Again, thanks a lot!
Kind regards,
Wilburg

=================================================Please post:
SmitFraudfix log (C:\rapport.txt),
VundoFix log (C:\vundofix.txt),
and fresh HijackThis log
Again thank you for your help. I followed your instructions and have the following comments to make, followed by the three logs you asked for.
1. Under the "Add/Remove Programs" menu I did indeed find a "VS Toolbar for IE" option, however upon clicking "Remove" it would not work. A window would pop-up and instantaneously disappear. Something is stopping the removal of this Toolbar.
2. There was no reference to Winantivirus2006 at all.
3. When double-clicking the PurityScan uninstaller icon, AVG Anti-Spyware would not let it the program execute, deeming it Adware. To override this I added the program to AVG AS's exceptions list.
4. The program itself ran fine.
5. There was no .../Program Files/PurityScan folder
6. You advised that the SmitFraudFix would take a while given that it scans large amounts of files. It only took 5 seconds on my laptop. Is that very good or really bad?
7. In any case, I attach the appropriate log below.
8. VundoFix seemed to work fine, although I note that one of the infected files it found (VSAdd-In.dll) was not mentioned in the subsequent section as to whether it was deleted etc.
In any case, please find below the appropriate logs...

It seems to me that there is no "VS Toolbar for IE" in your computer any more. To get rid of that false entry, do following...
- Run HijackThis
- Click Open the Misc Tool selection
- Click Open Uninstall Manager
- Search and select VS Toolbar for IE
- Click Delete this entry
===========================================Let me know how your computer is running and post new HijackThis too.
Have given my computer a few days to see whether anything pops up however it appears to be clean.
All that is left for me to say is an incredibly big "thank you" to you for your help. I applaud forums such as these!
Here is a final HJT log for you, as requested:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
- Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial aboveYou can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

- Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
- Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
- Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
- Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
- Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
- Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
- Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
- Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
- IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
- MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
- Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
- Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
