Hi Guys,

I've seemed to have picked up the same sort of virus that someone else has on this from. I've Run VundoFix.exe a couple times and it restarted the computer. I've now run Hijacthis, and its told me to ask some pro's about the log. AVG has a few files in the vault, explorer keeps coming up with pop up windows all the times. If someone could help, it would be great. Here is the log.

    Hi hey202 and welcome to Short-Media! :)

You have HijackThis in your Temp folder and that is not a good idea. Follow these instructions, which will download and install HijackThis to your Program Files folder...

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Close HijackThis
I now need you to go into the HijackThis folder in Program Files and rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe. Once that is done, create a new log and post it back here.

Along with that, I need to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Thanks for posting the logs. :)

    1. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

    VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer

    2. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Important note -- It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

    Hey Trogan,

I tried to uninstall "VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer" but it did not work. Whenever i hit the add/remove program button, nothing happened. Is this the program that brings up "pop-up" adds all the time? I ran VundoFix.exe anyway, and here is the log.

    Please do the following...

    1. Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {01808035-D9D1-429C-8222-F1F9C2CE1AA8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byvwv.dll (file missing)

    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

    Please do the following...

    1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
    2. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe Mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    3. Once in Safe Mode, try un-installing VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer from Add/Remove programs.

    4. Reboot back into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log.

Let me know how things are too. Do you have an active Firewall?

    Hi Trogan,

I've gone to the site, but there are a number of Java downloads. Is it the JDK 6 version? Also, I don't think i've ever rebooted the computer in safe mode. Can you please give me a brief guide. Thanks.

Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 on the link.

Follow my instructions for Safe Mode, they should work. Accessing Safe Mode is nothing scary once you have done it for a first time.

    Trogan,

    I've uninstalled the
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
and installed the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6. I then shutdown the computer and restarted in Safe Mode. TheVSAdd-in for Internet Explorer would still not uninstall :(. I tried this a number of times. However, the computer seems to be running at normal speed, and the annoying pop up windows don't seem to be appearing anymore. But here is the Hijackthis log anyway.

The HijackThis log is clean, so that is good.

For VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer, lets try this...

    Download CCleaner from here.
    • Select your language and click OK, then next.
    • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
    • Click next to use the default install location.
    • Under Install Options, choose all the default settings except I would recommend that you unclick/untick install the Yahoo! Toolbar, unless you want it. You can also Uncheck the 'Automatically check for updates' box.
    • Click Install then finish to complete installation.
    • Open CCleaner.
    • In the Left Pane, click Tools
    • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
    • Locate VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer and click on it .
    • Click Run Uninstaller on the menu to the right.
Make sure you have ALL windows and programs closed.

Let me know if that worked. Please let me know if you have a Firewall?

    Hi Trogan,

Thanks again for all your help.

I ran CCleaner, but the VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer would still not uninstall. The Firewall I use is the Windows Firewall, found in the Security Centre in the Control Panel.

I just have a couple of questions? Is VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer some sort of spyware? Also, what should I do with the files located in the Vault section of AVG antivirus program? Some of these files are Windows/Systems32 files.

    Regards..

Windows Firewall is fine, but do note that it only blocks incoming traffic and not outgoing.

VSAdd-in for Internet Explorer is adware and I normally see it installed with the infection you had. Also, it normally uninstalls without any hassle; not sure why its being stubborn. :rarr:

Do you get an error message or something when removing it?

I'd like you to run the following scan...

You may wish to Print or Save the following instructions, as the internet will not be available once in Safe Mode!

    Hey,

I did all that and ran the scan. But in safe mode, you can't see the whole screen of the AVG program. So I saved the report before Applying All Actions :(. And it took so long to scan. Anyway, here is the log.

I still continue to receive file warnings from AVG that a file is infected with the trojan horse. I just put them in the vault. Should I continue to do this?

    Hi hey202,

Your HijackThis log is clean. Can you tell me the location of the file that AVG is finding?

Also, I forgot to answer your question last time...
Also, what should I do with the files located in the Vault section of AVG antivirus program? Some of these files are Windows/Systems32 files.
You can leave them in the vault as the files are harmless now of you can delete them. Your choice! :)
  • edited March 2007
    Hi,

Here are the list of files in the vault.

  • edited March 2007
    Sorry,

That didn't work, I tried to print screen. I don't think you can cut and paste from AVG. The thing is, there are alot of Windows/System 32 type files in there, as well as others, and i'm afraid that if I delete these, it will affect the running of the computer?

eg. of one of the files that has been infected.
    C:\WINDOWS\systems32\awtsr.dll
  • TroganTrogan London, UK
    edited March 2007
That one file (awtsr.dll) is from the Vundo infection you had. If there was going to be a problem, you would have noticed it as soon as the file had been quarantined. Since, I assume, there is no problem, you can delete the files in AVG quarantine or leave them alone. It doesn't matter.

    Does that help?

Do you have anymore problems or questions?

    Ok,

Hey, thanks for all of your help. It has been much appreciated. If ever, you decide to visit Brisbane, I'll be sure to shout you a couple rounds. :)

    Cheers..
