[Help needed] SmitFraud-C.Toolbar888

Yesterday my sister wrongly clicked wrong link which correctly downloaded the wrong program and now my laptop is full of pop up art and baloons. I quickly went through the tutorial and scanned using Spybot. It found a variant of Smitfraud which is Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888, WildTangent and some Adware. I executed SmitFraud Fix and it found some problem. When i tried to perform clean up action in the safe mode, my laptop refused to start uo in the safe mode. All it asks is the User log in then a black screen with Safe mode text overlayed. So i've no other option but to execute the clean up action in the normal mode. It did some cleaning function. (I've included the log). When i again scanned with spybot it showed me Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 and it points out to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSSMGR.

Here is my HJT log

Thanks. I'll start that shortly. B/n, Last time when i use AVG anti-spyware to scan for spywares, it took 3 hrs to complete the entire process. Then it prompted me 17 threats of which one is flaged high. "worm.vb..." As i was not sure which options to should use, I selected all and applied delete action.

Also I've isolated my laptop from network to prevent further damage. So i'm using my dad's Desktop to reach you. Is there any way that enables me to update AVG without connecting my laptop to network?

Will post my VundoFix Log shortly.

Just want to let you know, when i run spybot, it detects SmitFraud-C.Toolbar888 and it fails to fix the problem. Everytime I run the scan, it detects and when i click on 'fix the problem', it says successful but on another scan it exists in the same old place.

Its better now and i think my system is free from malwares and trojans but I'm afraid to connect it to the network.

As i was searching for more info on smitfraud, i came across a forum in which i found a similar problem as mine. I've PM you the link (I'm not sure about posting other forum link in here).

I will check that link. Please, tell me what exactly is your problem now.

Everything is fine. Only thing that bugs me was the spybot's scan report on smitfraud.C.Toolbar888. Now i understood that its falsepositive.

I think you resolved my problem.

Shall I delete all the files inside the 'VundoFix Backups' ?
Waiting for further instructions.

I talked with one of my teachers and he deemed that this one is not falsepositive.
I'm sorry for wrong information.

Please, backup your registry before fix it:
• Start
• Run
• Type the following to the box and hit Ok: regedit
• A window opens, click on File
• Choose Export form the menu
• Change the save location to C:\
• Give the filename, RegBackUp
• Make sure that the filetype is set to Registryfiles (*.reg)
• Click on Save and Close the window

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR]

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".
Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.
Then reboot your computer.

=================================================

You can delete entire VundoFix Backups folder.

Panda ActiveScan

- Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Do NOT lose it!

Post Panda ActiveScan log and HijackThis log.

Alright I'll do that. Between, as i said i've isolated my laptop form network and now i'm at my dad's place. I'm subscribed to different ISP which is not available here. So I cannot run Panda Active Scan right now. Do i have any other option?
• edited March 2007
Just up with my spybot scan after an offline update. It was a clean run. Do i have to proceed with the "reg fix" steps?

Is there anyother way to confirm the results?

You must run Pand ActiveScan in your computer (with Internet Explorer).

Run HijackThis. Click Do system scan only.
Check following

You can do it just to make sure that this residual registry entry is complete gone.
Is there anyother way to confirm the results?

Yes, use Panda ActiveScan.
