I just don't know.

I dont know if this is a virus, or even malware, or if it's just my computer doing crazy things. I've tried everything I know how (not too much) and I'm at my wit's end. A few weeks ago I posted in the software section about the microsoft picture manager killing AVG. That's stopped since I installed WindowBlinds but now other things are happening.

When I try to change startup items in msconfig I recieve an "Access Denied error" telling me that I "may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." (I'm already on the admin account).

Also, svchost.exe crashes a lot and usually gives an error msg at system shutdown. I've also noticed that one of the processes with this name take up about 50% of my processor power and about 100MB of RAM usage on system start-up.

When I try to change the color of my background, my "Display Properties" window freezes and the rundll32.exe process must be ended. (This does NOT happen when Window Blinds is not running). When I try to unload Window Blinds I get a "Data Execution Precention - Microsoft Windows" the name is "Windows Explorer." Is window blinds a genuine program? or a hoax

Any help on this would be really great. I've been chatting with Dell about this but, unfortunatly, they're not very helpful about this. They just have me run the same test over and over :bawling: .

Your log seems to be clean. To make sure, please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your desktop. When ready, do following:

• Start AVG Anti-Spyware
• Click the Update icon
• Click Start update
• Wait until updates are downloaded
• Click the Scanner icon
• Open the Settings tab
  • Make sure that under "How to act?" read Quarantine
    (If not, click the text and choose Quarantine)
  • Under "How to scan?" all checkboxes should be ticked
  • Under "Reports" select Automatically generate report after every scan
    and uncheck Only if threats were found
  • Under "What to scan?" select Scan every file
• Click the Shield icon
• Under the "Resident shield is" click active to make it inactive
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware

Reboot to safe mode

• If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
• Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on
• Start tapping the F8 key
• The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears
• Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected
• Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode
• Login on your usual account

Thanks for the instructions. I've followed them until the safe mode part. For some reason my computer will not let me boot into safe mode. It stops booting at the "Welcome" screen but my name doesn't appear (I see the background picture but nothing else). I will keep trying to get into safe mode.

well I got into safe mode (had to disable the login screen program) and I did the scan but avg froze while trying to quarentine one of the items it found. So I'll try to write what I can here:

It found 9 items with 10 traces:

7 of the items were tracking cookies
1 item was "Not-A-Virus.Monitor.Win32.KeyLogger.30"
1 item was a "Trojan.Legmir" (this one had 2 traces in restore)

I can change my background and unload/load window blinds now without getting those data execution prevention messages and without rundll32.exe freezing.
But I still get access denied errors when I try to change startup items. what should I do about that?

the rundll32.exe error is back. i will run all the tests again and see if one of the viruses has been reinstalled or something. also, when i turned on my computer this time i couldn't open any applications or shut down my computer and i had to do a hard restart (hold in power button).

I prefer the Antibune Temp File Cleaner. It is very small but still powerful tool.

TeaTimer must be closed before fixing with HJT. I'm sorry I forgot to say that. Please do following:

• Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
• If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select Advanced Mode.
• On the left hand side, Click on Tools.
• Then click on the Resident Icon in the List.
• Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
• Restart your computer.

Close TeaTimer

• Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
• If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select Advanced Mode.
• On the left hand side, Click on Tools.
• Then click on the Resident Icon in the List.
• Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
• Restart your computer.

Close AVG Anti-Spyware guard

• Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the multi-colored box emblazoned with an 'S' in the system tray.
• In the 'Resident Shield' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection 'off' by clicking Change state which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
• If you are instructed to reboot at any time during your cleanup, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the Resident Shield".
• Reply no and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

Now, try again. Fix these:
